Oregon 43 landslides and rivers above flood stage

http://www.torontosun.com/2015/12/18/one-dead-car-swallowed-as-oregon-hit-by-landslides

Be safe out there Oregon
PORTLAND, Ore. - Landslides in western Oregon have damaged numerous homes, triggered evacuations and left at least one woman dead on Friday, as heavy rain wreaks havoc in coastal areas of the Pacific Northwest state.

An elderly woman and her dog were killed overnight on Friday when a rain-soaked hillside collapsed around the tiny coastal community of Florence, inundating the woman's home with mud and debris, an official with Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue said.

And it's one of those things where "staying safe" is a difficult choice. I guess if you know the soil makeup in your area then you'll know if it's best to remain indoors or go some place where the hillsides are more stable. Most people likely don't know such things.

I live in a suburb of Portland. I work outside and am so sick of it. Rain gear doesn't seem to work as there is so much of it. Oh and we're expecting more big storms on Monday and then again on Christmas. This is going to be the wettest month on record soon.

3. Sixteen inches of rain in less than three weeks and it's NOT the wettest month on record?

I guess that's a pretty good indication of what happens in the Northwest in an El Nino year.

However, we had an awfully dry summer. I welcome the rain, but maybe not this much.

It isn't anything like the '96 floods yet. They were shoring up the wall along the river in downtown Portland back then.

It looks like we made it out just in time, as we did travel 101 from Newport to Astoria, and even then the rain and wind were crazy.
