The driver of a runaway grain truck was slumped over at the steering wheel when a Nebraska sheriff’s deputy leaped aboard and stopped the vehicle before it rolled into Norfolk.

Sgt. Todd Volk, a 22-year veteran of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, intercepted the semitrailer truck by sprinting across a highway lane, jumping onto the tractor steps and grabbing the mirror and a handrail on the cab.

The truck, which had been erratically traveling north on U.S. Highway 81 at about 65 miles per hour, had slowed to about 20 mph as it neared the state’s ninth-largest city.

Volk opened the driver’s door, grabbed the steering wheel and hollered at the semi-conscious driver: “Hit the brakes! Hit the brakes!’’

threads here, and I've watched and criticized. But one tends to forget how dangerous their job really is and this situation...what an amazing feat. I watched it more than once. He is a real hero!
