Is It Time For A "Progressive" Forum?

I have been coming to DU for a long time under a variety of names. I used to contribute pretty regularly, but I don't any more.

Things have changed here. I'm certainly not the first to notice this. There are any number of threads that address the changing environment here. Not to mention the number of times it has come up in sub-threads.

For the longest time I was considered a member of the Democratic party. I guess it was around 1980 that I was referred to as a "liberal" - and that being a liberal was somehow a bad thing. As time passed, I began to be known as "someone on the Left" (whatever that means).

Now, I'm known as a "Progressive." I really don't think that I have changed my political or world views that much over the years. Yet, somehow, as the Right moved further right, I was considered to be increasingly on the Left.

But those here who think like I do, already know this from your own experience.

Okay...I'll accept that I'm now a "Progressive." It sort of fits well. After all jumping from being an FDR Democrat to a "Progressive" isn't really that far a leap.

Realizing that there is absolutely no chance that Democratic Underground would change their name to "Progressive Underground" I would respectfully suggest that we at least have a forum for Progressives...a "Progressive Forum."

While some will see this as a means of dividing us and thus hamper our abilities to exchange ideas. I see it as an opportunity to actually have threads that will not be hijacked with non-progressive ideology.

What say you....?

I would say "yes." However, they're not Progressives, so no biggie.

Socialist Progressives: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1024

Please be aware, though, that the lead host in that group has final say as to what is progressive and what is not. There are some things/people that you may not want to criticize, or risk being banned from the group.

Its all true FDR Dems, Progressives, Liberals, etc who've Got the Bern.

You'll see names like marym, Catherina, Manny, Autumn, Bother Ivan, TM99, merrily, and so on. The articles posted on the main page are really interesting. The layout is fantastic. Its (almost) brand-spankin new, so there are still some kinks, but overall its very impressive!

*on edit, but if you mean here at DU, there's http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1277

Its not very active since around the time Bernie's campaign began to really take off. But there are some great conversations there.

However, I hope that it is understood that my intent isn't to bash DU. DU has been an oasis in a land of confusion for years. Don't let the low number of posts fool you. I have been here under a variety of names and accounts.

DU has been an important part of my education and enjoyment.

I feel comfortable here. Lots of different perspectives, which is one of the attributes that makes progressivism so refreshing.

It's not, however, an echo chamber. Is that what you seek?

...but I can see where you might interpret it that way.

An echo chamber does not lend itself to diverse thinking. I would hope that DU would be a place where that is still available.

No one would stop others (non-progressives) from contributing to a "Progressive Forum."

However, given the circular firing squads we seem to specialize in on the left, they may or may not meet your standards, just as you may or may not meet theirs.
