Oddly, this isn't even the worst vehicular crowd attack in Nevada history

http://www.nytimes.com/1982/03/30/us/reno-woman-who-killed-six-with-auto-sentenced-to-die.html

A jury sentenced Priscilla Ford to death today for killing six people as she drove through a crowded sidewalk on Thanksgiving Day 1980.

The jury deliberated five days before sentencing Mrs. Ford, 53 years old, to death.

The District Attorney called Mrs. Ford ''evil personified''; her lawyer argued that she was mentally ill. Mrs. Ford, a former teacher, was convicted March 19 on six counts of murder and 23 of attempted murder. She had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Despite that plea, Mrs. Ford bristled at the suggestion that she was insane. The trial took an unexpected turn in February when Mrs. Ford insisted on taking the stand. She testified that she was the incarnation of Jesus and incapable of sin.

A driver intentionally steered his car onto a sidewalk on the crowded Las Vegas Strip and then accelerated in a deadly scene resembling "humans being mowed down like a lawnmower," police said Thursday.

One person died and 13 were hospitalized, many with major injuries, after Wednesday's crash. A 27-year-old man faces charges of murder and attempted murder, Deputy Police Chief Greg McCurdy said.

"It appears he did this intentionally. The reason is questionable," McCurdy said Thursday.

The man, Stephen Michael Ressa of Rialto, Calif., had also been sought by his hometown police in a near-fatal assault Monday on his mother, who owned the car Ressa was driving in Las Vegas.

Vehicular rampage killing is not as common in the US as it is in other countries (particularly China), but we seem to be in a cluster of them right now (this, Stillwater, and SXSW last year). It's also just about the only form of mass murder that women in the US commit with any frequency.

Back in October, during the OK State homecoming parade.

That was the second-deadliest vehicular massacre in US history, after the one in Reno I mentioned upthread. Both attackers were women (I bring that up not as a joke but just because it's seriously intriguing to me that this is the only kind of random spree killing women seem to do, for the most part, at least in the US).

but ugly.

A sixth victim died this morning from injuries sustained Sunday when a driver ran off Interstate 15 and plowed through a group of students picking up trash alongside the roadway.

Jessica Williams, 20, the driver of the minivan, may face involuntary manslaughter charges. She was in the Clark County Detention Center this morning.

Williams, a dancer at a Las Vegas strip club, who turns 21 on Friday, was initially charged with six counts of felony DUI and felony reckless driving and one count of possession of a controlled substance, Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Cabrales said.
