Tonight SpaceX made history by landing the stage 1 booster. They also deployed 11 satellites during the low earth orbit trip.
On the left is the launch, top right is reentry of the booster, the bottom right is the landing, which was successful for the first time.
A special thanks to bananas for pointing out it was even flying tonight.
Edit to add the video, Thanks ChisolmTrailDem
Video was updated. 31:00 is the beginning of the reentry and landing of the booster.

History was made tonight. Space flight just got much cheaper.
Everyone I know (including me) said we'll never pull off landing a booster. They did it though.

(2,603 posts)I'm on the SW coast and it is hazy tonight. The best I might have caught is the reentry.
The launch was awesome though. Wish I had grabbed the camera, but I didn't know it was even launching until a few minutes before launch. I just ran out to catch it. Had an awesome fire trail under it though.
After it faded off after the roll, I came back in to catch the live stream.
Wish I had known this morning. I would have driven the 3 hours to Canaveral to see it first hand.

(9,463 posts)...that I saw. I guess if it ain't politics or murder or terrorism, it's not noteworthy.

(40,416 posts)Homage to Andy Weir, Mark Watney, Werner von Braun, and Elon Musk.
I have not been this excited since my college days of the Saturn V.
This is just good shit.

(2,603 posts)back in the early 80's. Incredible experience. 7 miles away and when liftoff occurred I could feel the ground pounding under my feet. It wasn't a slight hmm or vibration, it was a pounding.
From my understanding the Saturn and Titan class rockets were even more impressive.

I'm gonna get as close as I can for the launch of this one.

(40,416 posts)It was almost all fuel. That is what it took to put people first into orbit, then a TLI (Trans-Lunar Injection), then an orbit around the Moon from which the lunar lander could do its thing. Three hundred and sixty fucking feet of volatile fuel!
We had two accidents. One on the launchpad with Apollo 1. Three astronauts died. The second with Apollo 13, brought back safely. Thank you Gene Kranz and his incredible team. And yes, Kranz openly weeped in Houston mission control when they landed safely.
These kind of things are inspiring. That is why all the folks at SpaceX were cheering tonight. I am too.
My best to you.
