Washington (CNN)Donald Trump's lead over Ted Cruz has shrunk to just 4 percentage points in the second national poll after last week's Republican debate.
Trump wins 28% support in a Quinnipiac poll released Tuesday, with Cruz nipping at his heels with 24%. Following that pair is Marco Rubio with 12% support, Ben Carson with 10%, Chris Christie with 6% and Jeb Bush with 4%. The survey was in the field entirely after CNN's debate in Las Vegas on Dec. 15.
Cruz has been steadily climbing and overtaking Trump in Iowa, and there is some evidence that the Texas senator is managing to perform similarly nationally. But in most polls, Trump's national lead has stretched to new heights, with some recent surveys showing that more than 40% of Republican voters would support him today.
A Fox News poll taken similarly after the debate showed Trump with 39% support.

(118,696 posts)Cruz I doubt likes most other humans and seems to enjoy making others unhappy.

(9,120 posts)Darn! I was going to see Tedito beat the Donald in the primaries and then get whipped in the November 2016 election.
Since I'm a Texan, I'm already thinking about 2018 and a chance to fire Cruz from the US Senate.

(2,884 posts)I really relished the perspective of seeing Trump as the official contender.
Maybe with Michelle Bachmann as a VP.
I love comedy.

(2,884 posts)You can't expect a guy who built a fortune to be a complete idiot:
he's a very effective demagogue, he knows what buttons to push on.
Luckily, his rhetoric is too ham fisted for his own good.

(58,724 posts)I just thought he was in it for some PR and was not particularly interested in becoming President.
In fact, I still sort of think that.

(2,884 posts)He's in it for the fun*.
If he wins the presidency, that would be an added bonus.

(10,175 posts)I think he has a serious shot at the presidency, with Hillary as nominee. The Republicans will come out in force to vote against her.
DNC is seriously underestimating Trumps appeal, and so are the polls.
