Why that now-retracted Washington Post cartoon is a gift to Ted Cruz

Media-bashing Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz was handed a political gift Tuesday night when The Washington Post retracted an editorial cartoon that depicted his two young daughters as monkeys.

The animated cartoon, by Pulitzer Prize winner Ann Telnaes, sketched the Texas senator in a Santa suit turning a Jack-in-the-box-style crank that made the monkeys dance. A headline said, “Ted Cruz uses his kids as political props” — a reference to a recent viral campaign video in which Cruz and his daughters spoofed familiar Christmas stories.

We all abhor Ted Cruz and his nutty, dangerous rhetoric, but everyone's kids have to be of-limits in the political season. This is a prize piece of red meat he can use from now until election day.

The cartoon did not attack Trump's daughters. It attacked Cruz for USING HIS DAUGHTERS AS PROPS. And the criticism is very justified in this case.

But our media cannot be bothered telling the truth. You want to counter that. (I question the choice of monkeys but for the rest, this is a perfect example of political BS). He is the one who used his daughters, and he is so shocked people noticed he is again using them to fundraise.

instead of how their message is.

Telnaes cartoon was far too open to misinterpretation and yet only gives ignorant right wingers another reason to justify their crap.

I'm sure you would have a problem with some cartoonist drawing his kids as monkeys.

unlike Cruz's kids who I've heard participated in that "skit" where TC was mocking Obama policies.

That does not make minor children subject to scorn and ridicule by the media, even if it is just as a tool to attack the parent.

We're better than this.

sentences she probably does not understand. Sorry, but I do. I feel sorry for her daughter to be used this way. This is far beyond the usual "my dad is the best" kids that young kids are traditionally used for.

Leave the kids out of it. And especially don't portray partly Hispanic kids as monkeys. DUers would be furious if a cartoonist did this to the children of a Hispanic Democrat.

It's the kind of conversation the beltway punditocracy loves to have because it's by them and about them, but it has very little relevance to the American voter.
