Davis, infamously, railed against the Supreme Courts order legalizing gay marriage this summer by refusing to issue marriage licenses altogether, categorizing her arguably bigoted views as a religious exemption. She was jailed over her contempt of court and the argument made its way to the states highest court, where a judge ruled Davis would have to issue the licenses, despite the evident discomfort she felt signing off on equal rights for gay couples.
Because until Tuesday, Kentucky law required the clerks name be written on the licensea statute Davis would later attempt to circumvent by illegally altering the licenses. Even so, for a time, it seemed she might be forced to do the right thing.

But though Davis lost the war, she did, in the end, win a battle: Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin, a Republican, issued an executive order Tuesday changing the forms. The new licenses, Bevins office announced, will instead cater to the states most intolerant employees. Via UPI:
To ensure that the sincerely held religious beliefs of all Kentuckians are honored, Executive Order 2015-048 directs the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives to issue a revised marriage license form to the offices of all Kentucky county clerks. The name of the county clerk is no longer required to appear on the form, Bevins office said in a statement.
A beautiful gift for Kim Davisa tacit endorsement of her discrimination. Plenty of people hold sincere beliefs. The Son of Sam sincerely believed that his neighbors dog was ordering to kill people. Doesnt mean we should legalize murder.

(27,461 posts)I don't think there is any great need to have her name, or any bureaucrat's name, on the license.

I think the law change is a good one as it removes an obstacle going forward.

(30,813 posts)Granted, she no longer must have her name on a marriage license.
But now gay couples can go to that town's offices and get a marriage license, in spite of the fact that she is the town clerk there. Before - they couldn't.

Pyrrhic victory for her at best.

(1,089 posts)the bubble in which she must now exist to avoid being openly despised is very small indeed. I'm guessing she's safe inside of that bubble where she is now, but the majority of people out there think this is an evil bigot. Anytime she steps outside that very small bubble, she'll be reminded of that for the rest of her life.

(13,340 posts)So long as people can get their license, I do not give a shit. In fact, if I lived in her county, I wouldn't want her name on anything, ESPECIALLY my marriage license.
I'm fine with this.
