GOPPERS believe that lowering wages increases job creation. Businesses can hire more workers because their money goes farther when their salary budget is less. You can hire twice as many workers when you pay half as much. That is why they are against minimum wages going up or minimum wages at all.
Workers should only make as much as the market can afford. And markets should determine a worker's worth to an employer. When workers produce more the market will reward them with higher pay.

(115,836 posts)Businesses will hire only as many workers as they need to produce their products or services. If wages are reduced, this will not cause a business to hire more workers unless they actually need them; they'll just make more profit.
Here's a real-world example of how wrong this belief is: In my state, Minnesota, the minimum wage was recently raised (as were taxes on the highest brackets). What happened? One of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, a bit more than 3% (3% is what most economists think is about the lowest realistically-attainable rate). Except on the Iron Range, where there is higher unemployment because of reduced demand for iron ore, we have a worker shortage, especially for skilled workers. "Help Wanted" signs are everywhere. The economy, in a state mostly run by Democrats who have rejected the GOP's discredited supply-side approach, is doing very well, thank you very much.

businesses will ever hire--at any wage--more employees than they actually need and then pay them to sit around and do nothing because there's not enough work to keep them all busy?
Want more jobs? Increase demand by putting more disposable income in the hands of people who need and want stuff they can't afford on their subsistence level wages.
