General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWe just saw the most exquisite movie: The Danish Girl.
Where do I begin? What a story. Pioneering spirit. Beautiful photography.
Amazing acting (I will predict Eddie Redmayne wins the Academy Award again, this year).
Gorgeous period costumes. Wonderful supporting cast. A view into the world of
psychiatry almost 100 years ago.
It will probably only screen in art house theaters. My husband is a psychiatrist/psychoanalyst,
so you can imagine the conversation we had after seeing the movie!
I highly recommend it. If you see it, come back and post your thoughts.

(247 posts)Just my opinion but, I didn't like it at all. Like all Tom Holland movies it's an Oscar-seeking missile, this one aimed at Hollywood's large gay community. Eddie Redmayne seems to have taken the same lesson from winning the Oscar that Al Pacino did--over-acting wins. He mugs thru the whole thing, indicating his emotions so blatantly than you don't even need to know English to "get it". This is the opposite of the subtlety he's shown in movies such as "A Brief History of Time" or on stage in "Red". The rest of the cast shows him up, especially Alicia Vikander.
BTW the only thing that actually happened as told in this "based on a true story" fraud, is the incident where posing in stockings and dress unlocks the main characters desire to live as a woman. The rest is made up, including the scenes with the psychiatrists. Also left out is the likelihood that Einar/Lilli was intersex fka as hermaphroditic, not anatomically male. Her surgeon said as much in his writings on Lilli's story.

(63,221 posts)Eddie Redmayne is one of my favorite actors, if not my favorite. I'm looking forward to it!
Thanks!
