It Is Sad To See So Much Destruction. These Disasters Show How Important Functioning Govt Is.

You really hate to see such destruction around Christmas or any time. And the amount of devastation and the response of "first responders" and government entities show how important a functioning well funded government is and what government employees do. I hope that the citizens in these areas learn to appreciate who and what is going to help them put their lives back together.

You cannot do it on your own when nature trashes you so thoroughly. Without decent government services there is no way to have a sane civilization.

able to see it. They have been brainwashed into believing that the government is the source of their problems. It is hard to let go of a way of thinking, even when everything around you is ruined.

to you and says, "I'm from a corporation, and I'm here to help"

Is that what you wanted, Ronnie?

where the man from the corporation then bursts out laughing. And that is exactly what republicans want...privatize the "help" so only those who can afford to pay for it get it.

In Great Britain some local police forces are already privatized. The goal here is to do the same. That way police and fire will only respond to those who can pay for the services I guess. First responders face a lifetime of danger and cannot perform once past 55 due to the stresses involved. It is absurd to believe we can RETRAIN all these people for new jobs at that age.

Plus look at private security guards who work just under a living wage for their services. Do we want our firefighters and police working for a pittance. Do you want a 60+ year old on that fire engine carrying 70 lbs of equipment.

Nobody says police and fire safety departments are a bad thing, or that drivers license and a host of other government functions are bad.

But if you reduce that to "government" and say "goverment" is a good thing you've plunged into loony land.

China's 1-child policy was government. During the Soviet de-kulak/collectivization campaign, it was also "government" and moreover billed as a public safety--the collectivization was done to "ensure" food supply for those that mattered, the urban base of the CPSS.

You get to argue service and function by service and function, not overgeneralizing from a service or function that nearly everybody considers good to necessarily include functions that are considered bad.

Anti-sodomy ordinances and miscenegation laws were government. The War on Drugs is government.

So I guess the analogical argument is to say that if you're against the War on Drugs you hate the idea of the ACA and help from FEMA (etc.) during disasters?
