http://www.democraticunderground.com/10027476529I thought last night I might have to go to er to have it cut off but I iced it a lot and made it through.
I went to a fine jewelry shop today and the gemologist cut it off. He had the perfect tools and was able to gently get it off with the least damage possible. He is going to fix it good as new and actually strengthen it. It will cost us about 400 dollars but he said it would last my lifetime.
Now the wait begins. He wants my finger to heal about a week (there is a pretty good gouge in it) then I will go in for sizing then he will fix it good as new or better.
It's the first time I have not had my rings on in 26 years. I feel naked.
I would have never gotten it off no matter what tricks we tried. It was just mangled to badly. The jeweler was surprised my finger wasn't broken.
Thanks again for all your help.

(115,806 posts)I'm glad to hear the jeweler took care of it. When I've had that done I could not see the repair at all, so I'm sure it will be fine.

(103,856 posts)The bottom part got "flattened" somehow, and when I went to have it "rounded", I was told that I would have to pay "per stone" to have them all reset..so I just quit wearing it
Did I mention that I am a cheapskate? and after nearly 46 years, I remember that I am married, and no one hits on me anyway

(856 posts)I flattened a ring and took it to a jeweler fully expecting to have to pay to fix it. He fixed (re-rounded) it on the spot and for no charge. I don't wear a lot of jewelry but I always go there now because I trust him to be fair after that experience.

(63,912 posts)The new realities is that we are spending a lot more on our health care as we age and that is more important than jewelry (unless you have enough money for both and we don't right now). Also, I had to buy a new car this year as my old one died and it was time (I had a great run for lots of years with no payments since my mother paid for it in cash). AND the upkeep on the house always comes at bad times so we have learned to have a reserve for that. And so it goes...

of course we live in a pretty big city.
They took a picture of the rings and included the photo in with the paperwork. Made me feel better that they take security and safety seriously.

(63,912 posts)they took my insurance card and I was charged nothing more. I asked the P.A. who cut off the rings what was the most common health issues they see and she said "alcohol related accidents." Mine wasn't, but I thought that was interesting.

(24,026 posts)...who was Greek Orthodox. He had his ring sized for his left ring finger. At the ceremony, he was surprised to find out that he was supposed to wear it on his right hand. They managed to jam it on. Part way thru the reception, the EMTs had to be called to cut it off because his finger was turning purple and swelling up.
There were the inevitable jokes about what a bad omen it was to have to get your brand new wedding ring cut off at the reception. Well, some years later, guess who got divorced because his wife was cheating on him.

(31,997 posts)hoping I can get it sized by next week so they can get started on fixing it.
