KVOT in Taos NM was my app on my phone to listen to liberal radio talkers.
Turned it on today and was treated to syrupy inspiring Christian music....and the logo changed to Christian Radio.
Looked it up online and station was sold to another broadcast group.
So the slow death of liberal talk radio continues I guess.

(29,073 posts)I don't understand why a liberal demographic like that which exists in NM and CA can't
keep a liberal station.

(1,787 posts)I haven't in years (other than Satellite XM when driving), and I don't know anybody who listens to AM, where most of the talk radio is.

(29,073 posts)I'm in the Chicago area, and I listen to WCPT Progressive Radio.
It's on AM, but the content is great, so who cares?
If liberals don't patronize liberal media, they can't complain about the wing nuts taking over
the airways.

(1,787 posts)but not here in Northern Calif. In fact, I know very few liberals who don't stream their TV now. The Network news stations are also on their way out here. I guess nobody here wants to listen to the main stream media period. I haven't seen anything but Netflix (and now Curiosity Stream, which I learned from this site and went and ordered it) for several years now.

(29,073 posts)I stream tv too, but I'm not sure what that has to do with radio. Bottom line,
if you're politically involved, and you don't want the Right taking over everything,
it would be best to listen to and patronize the REAL "liberal media" and stay involved.

(36,063 posts)But I've grown old and am sort of beyond the target audience of the general sillyness of Stephanie Miller which is on during morning commute. I like the mid-day Thom Hartmann but I'm not often in the car then... I don't care for Wayne Besen during the afternoon commute at all when they added him my listening dropped off pretty sharply...
I can get The MIC 92.1 FM out of Madison when I'm out west of Milw in Jefferson Co. Mitch Henck's magazine show in the morning is bipartisan, but it can be good on local music and resaurant scene and he has John Nichols on regularly which is always fun. The Devils Advocates in the late afternoon are really good on WI politics and Walker-roasting.
whathehell
(29,073 posts)Norman Goldman is good. I'm not that fond of Wayne Bessen either, but I listen mostly to hear
his callers.
Sometimes out of desperation I'll even listen to RW talk radio, just to see what they're saying. Can't stand it for long though.
I use to like Coast to Coast even though it was completely bonkers. (That's why I liked it, actually.) But it's gotten so stupid that it isn't even worth tuning to the show to see what's on this episode any more, it is usually something b.s anymore. Not fun b.s. like "reptilians" but puke-worthy Jerome Corsi crap.
I do like NPR at times but it seems they are trying to appeal to a younger demographic these days, or at least a demographic that isn't me. (Does anyone actually like Jonathan Goldstein or whatever his name is?) They still have some great shows like On the Media, but that usually isn't on when I want to listen and I'd have to go to the effort of retrieving a podcast.
I wish I could find liberal talk radio on AM as easily as I can find the right-wing or "Christian" crap.

(47,803 posts)The domination of right wing talk radio has done a lot of damage and weakened the left side of the spectrum .
Many of the people who listen to AM radio may into be diehard liberals, but when they turn on the radio while driving to work, or as background chatter at home and work get subjected to 24/7 Right Wing distortions. That's how poisonous attitudes get injected and spread in the mainstream.
There should be at least a balance, so that listeners get to hear something otehr how demonic liberals are, how evil all democratic politicians are and how wonderful conservatism is.

(37,748 posts)Hence the need for the Fairness Doctrine in regards to broadcast networks (not however, subscription cable networks) or the equitable alternative, setting stronger station ownership caps and stronger "public interest" standards enforcement, as the public owns the airwaves and licenses it to the broadcast networks.
Additionally, remove commercials from the one hour block of local and national evening news to better ensure the denial of conflicts of interest and/or financial coercion.

(14,449 posts)Conservatives listen to the radio and TV. We have other avenues like the Internet to get our our information. Let them have the radio and TV. Big deal.

(29,073 posts)That sounds condescending. What are you angry about?
FWIW, if liberals can watch television and surf the net, they can certainly listen to "liberal talk radio",
whatever your use of those scare quotes means.

valerief
(53,235 posts)I only really listen to a few channels. The Progress channel, Radio Classics, the Sinatra channel, the Real Jazz channel, and that's about it. I'm old, and there aren't many people who'd like just these. I don't even listen that much anymore, since I don't drive as often as I used to. But it's better than the shit on free radio.

(16,254 posts)It's nice not to have all the ads and garbage. The guests are usually pretty good, as well. Also, they pretty much say what they want and I don't get the feeling of censorship.

(25,962 posts)but it's really no different from AM talk radio regarding ads, and it's especially dismaying when a respected host is reduced to hawking wares every few minutes.

(14,449 posts)I know they are not as liberal as some would like but their ratings suck and always have even at the height of liberal programs. TV is dying so who cares who owns them.

(19,537 posts)where they wiped out other stations where I used to live (KLSD in San Diego and later KPOJ here in Portland).
They made a documentary that has aired on the likes of FSTV and LINK TV on how they destroyed KLSD in San Diego so that they could put in place a sports station with LOWER ratings, which makes you wonder what the motivation was if it wasn't ad profits that would be lower...
That was me in the V costume at the KLSD protests way before it was the uniform in Occupy protests...

(1,278 posts)Is one of my favorites on iHeartRadio, and has a local show (Jeff Messer) at 3p ET. However, they are a daytimer, so you have to be in Buncombe County to listen to them over the air.
If I'm not mistaken, Albuquerque still has a progressive station. KABQ am1350, also on the iHeartRadio app. Plus TuneIn has a bunch of links to national progressive shows and podcasts, including The Young Turks.

(10,337 posts)Around the country using the tune in radio app. Steph (fart jokes) Miller if you like that sort of thing. I find her show on the too Juvenial side for my taste but whatever. Thom Hartman, etc. Also, Ed Schultz and Nicole Sandler have daily podcasts you can subscribe to free. All is not lost...yet. We still have a progressive station broadcasting out of Phoenix but there is no doubt that the oligarchs are doing everything they can to silence us.

(2,161 posts)I'm lucky enough to be able to listen to KPFA radio, 94.1 in SFBay area. Non commercial, listener-sponsored radio.
I see Thom Hartmann via Free Speech TV on DISH network. Check your cable or satellite system if you still get TV service, you might get Free Speech as one of your public access channels. No commercials here, either.
I'm thinking that not many progressives anywhere can tolerate all the commercials, and AM progressive radio will never make it anywhere.

(7,412 posts)If they can't attract money from companies all the time there's no way to stay on the air. Good luck getting sponsors with the talent talking about anti-corporate stuff, the people with the money don't like that. Even at the local level, small businesses don't want to endorse topics like raising the minimum wage, etc.

(2,535 posts)Conservatives are buying all the talk radio stations and changing the programming to all conservative. Bill Press, Thom Hartman and Stephanie Miller's replacements have lower ratings in many cases but they want to keep the conservative theme. Demand doesn't really have much to do with this arrangement.

(3,173 posts)you can stream WCPT from Chicago. It is independently owned. The day: Bill Press, Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, local-Wayne Besen, Norman Goldman, delayed Democracy Now, delayed Alan Colmes, then reruns all night. Its a great station. Hope it helps!

(2,535 posts)I use a radio program recording service that is $50 a year and you can record as much as 15 hours a day and they will store a large amount. I download it from my PC to the phone by wifi. You can listen when you want to.
It is DAR Radio

(1,245 posts)Seems to be back to being progressive talk for my morning drive in. Boy was I excited to hear Thom Hartmann instead of f***ing 'The Jungle' when I randomly tuned it in the other day ...
So there's that at least ...
