(1,245 posts)We had the show on pretty early here in AZ due to our time zone and it starting at 8 here so I tried to cajole everyone into watching to see Aretha.
Wife and I were both like, bawling practically. SO SO amazing.

(32,623 posts)Carol King was all SQUEE throughout. HOW is it that Aretha still has her whole voice, her whole range? That woman has been touched by Godess.

(12,157 posts)I think Carol wrote the whole sound track of my youth. Recently she recounted how she heard Ms. Franklin singing "A Natural Woman" on the radio. She had no idea that Aretha was covering her song.

(1,245 posts)I can still sing every word to every song on side 1 of that album off the top of my head cuz I listened to it SO MUCH when I was 7-8 years old. My parents bought me my own copy cause they didn't want me wearing theirs out on my crappy little 'suitcase' record player with the colored lights in the top half that flashed with the beat ...

(14,176 posts)Her voice sounded better than it has in like 15 years now (as she's gotten older, the transitions from chest to head voice have been rough sometimes and she's opted not to use her glorious chest voice nearly as much) and the emotion was astonishing, especially when you remember that she doesn't get a song or two to build up momentum.
And how great an honoree was Ms King? She's so brilliantly affirming the whole way through, continually encouraging Ms Franklin to go for it.
Just wonderful.

(4,033 posts)the fact that Aretha honored Ms. King by singing it the way it was sung on Tapestry, not the way Aretha originally sang it. That's what was so freaking amazing. She honored it as Ms. King's song.
I once saw a TV show that had Ms. King and Ms. Franklin both on it & Aretha sang this song & stated it was the first time she had sung it with the song writer.

I have the Aretha LP with this on it...been listening to a lot of 60-70's this week....so eclectic, so much good soul, pop, and rock....there would be no room for that sort of variety today....simple, direct without over-engineered, souless cookie cutter celebs.
