'The cable news wars have only escalated with the lead in to the 2016 presidential election. One network has made drastic changes in an attempt to increase their ratings, but have failed to gain much traction.
In the world of American news media, three networks fight for supremacy, with each carving out their own special niche to appeal to a portion of the audience. Each week, Nielsen Media Research releases the ratings for all of the TV networks, cable news included. As The New York Times reported on Dec. 30, the left leaning MSNBC is still struggling among its competitors.
As expected, the conservative Fox News continued its ratings dominance, securing their 14th straight year as the number one cable news network in the country. Fox News' primetime numbers increased by three percent, pulling in just under 1.8 million total viewers. In comparison, MSNBC grabbed 559,000 total viewers in the primetime hours. CNN landed in the middle of the pack, with an average of 712,000 viewers during primetime. In the much coveted demographic of viewers between 25-54 years old, Fox News dwarfed the competition. With 339,000, Fox News jumped 13 percent compared to the previous year. MSNBC, on the other hand, was down 19 percent with the demo in total day viewership, and down 18 percent with the demo during primetime.'>>>

(45,251 posts)go down when they talk about Sanders or O'Malley. They are thought of as a network primarily for Democrats. Democrats are not hungry to hear Trump's latest slur repeated and dissected from 5 am to midnight.

(45,319 posts)because it mentions 'three networks' then talks about cable outlets which are not the three networks. The news programming on each of the three broadcast networks each night is in the millions, week of December 14: NBC 8,830,000 ABC: 8,396,000 CBS 7,355,000. So 24.5 million people are watching the news on those three. What was Fox's average? 1.8 million? If we combined all the cable outlets into one big audience it would still be a fraction of CBS viewership alone.
The other huge element is demographic. These cold viewer numbers count everyone, the real deal is the 25-54 age group in which Fox really fails. CBS News, for example, has in demo totals as large as Fox News entire viewership. Not good.
1.8, or 'just under 1.8' million is not that many people in television terms. And that's their peak cheese. Most of their programming and most cable commentary programming in general is so scantly watched it is hard to call it mass media without snickering in my cuff.

(4,458 posts)and restaurant, and gas station, and bar and and and has FOX News on? I wonder if that pushes up their ratings..the damn channel is on every where all the time...it would appear as tho a lot more people watch FOX when they aren't.
That's one huge difference and advantage over the other infotainment cable news outlets I see for FOX over the rest...

(19,838 posts)No ratings would actually be gathered from the audiences in waiting rooms, etc., but those who are actually in "Neilsen families" might become more inclined from public exposure to watch it at home where it counts.

(4,458 posts)hosp rooms/wait rooms etc at least count as One household? That's the advantage. Not that every person is claimed as a viewer - but rather every cable connection?
I don't know what criteria they use as a measure...but If my question is at all applicable...these "extra FOX viewers" could skew the results. "Popularity" even If false-also skews the mind...."everybody else watches FOX-they must know" sheeple.
And in some parts of the country-FOX is All they have access to...as "some people" have stated

(2,805 posts)CNN picks three stories a day and repeats over and over again. MSNBC is political crap all day every day.
If CNN went back to reporting actual news maybe they would get back into gas stations and such.
Fox wins because it tells you the news and slips in its political crap and the goes back to the news. The others don't seem to get the formula.
Everytime I hear we have 24/7 time to fill, I say well there is plenty to learn in those hours. It does not have to be all political "debate".

They don't care about ratings on msnbc. Just can't offend corporate overlords.

(4,458 posts)How disingenuous of this competitor to offer such green manure..... lol
The Reason that they are Still struggling is because they decided to go lean Waaaay further right and dumped a bunch of great people.
If "lacking Andy" wants seriously to get viewers back they may want to offer some quality investigative journalism and be watchdogs of the govt for the people as intended.
Net Neutrality, Police Abuse, Income Inequality, TPP, in depth reports on Congress and legislative intent, wall street crimes, keystone, climate change and the environment, GOP racism/fascism, state governments/ethics/corruption etc, etc, etc.

I have lost a bit of respect for Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell....who have toed the line to stay on the air; no TPP talk and other parameters. I already lost respect for Tweety, ever since his get a room moment gushing about Dubya during that fake victory landing on the aircraft carrier.
