A tiny purple kitten in the South Bay is now looking forward to a better future after being dropped off at a Redwood City shelter this week.
The cat nicknamed Smurf for his dark violet hue was colored as a very young cat by a sort of undiluted garment dye intended for clothing. Vets found that the dye was more than just for show; it had been masking abrasions and deep bite marks. As Nine Lives Foundation shelter vet Monica Rudiger suggested to The Dodo, these types of injuries may be consistent with the practice of using very young kittens as live bait for dogs being trained to fight.
"In our area, cats are used as bait for pit bulls every day. It's just horrifying," Rudiger said. "That's why you don't offer free kittens out on the internet they use them for whatever they want."
In this case, Smurf was lucky to find his way to safety.
"I don't know what happened to him, but my best guess is that he was used as a chew toy. We have a cat with multiple puncture wounds and abrasions," Rudiger said. "He can't tell us what happened to him, but I've seen this before."

Edit: I've been informed by wouldsman that the poor kitten has been sprayed with Blu-Kote, a Gentian Violet based wound dressing for domestic animals. It's not supposed to be used on cats, as it is not safe to ingest. I can imagine it's very distressing and perhaps even dangerous for the kitten, as it would instinctively try to lick itself clean.

The look on that little kitty's face is all I need to know about the people who first had him.

(14,918 posts)It is so depressing to think of the depravity that brought him to this condition and to know that it wasn't an isolated phenomenon. Those eyes! He reminds me of Dobby.[img]?w=395&h=300[img]

(94 posts)Not that the inaccuracy of the blue dye from the garment industry makes this story any less tragic, but the cat was sprayed with Blu Kote.

A commonly used product for wound care of dogs, cows, horses, etc.
The blue was someones feeble attempt to provide some care for the kitten. Maybe just so it could be used as a chew toy again, but it was an attempt at care.

(30,884 posts)The rescue's FB page discussions have people who suggested it was this wound spray and they counter it with the vet's assessment which is an undiluted purple dye. A vet should know the difference, right?
wouldsman
(94 posts)Not sure that they would bother to do a lab sample and look at the pigment under a microscope.
Vet's doing this kind of work, which may likely be unpaid and after-hours and very stressful, may not think of the possibility of a product like BluKote and then get defensive when others suggest it.
Obviously I can't be for sure either, but as OP notes in the edit, a cat will instinctively lick and therefore ingest this product and it will add to their health problems. This cat looks very dehydrated and malnourished too- a likely outcome of blukote ingestion.
Either way, pics like these of poor abused little critters, and the story that goes with it, whether absolutely true or just fairly close, remind us of the vulnerability of pets and animals and our need to care for them to the best of our ability.
And for that a thank you to the vets, who ever it was that brought the cat in, and the OP who brought the story to our attention.

(44,397 posts)SMURF update! Today SMURF was playing with his 2 new friends, feeling so much better! Thank you to everyone who has called & visited ! This little guy will undergo surgery next week to repair the large wound on his right leg/ knee but all the other wounds are healing nicely! His little friend CHERRY shown on his left, takes good care of him! They will be going into foster care next week together!

I just cannot imagine what it's like to be a human who's so cruel to animals, especially so systematically cruel like that. What a miserable existence it must be, and they spread that misery around to the most helpless among us. It's so so awful.
Luckily there are many more good people than bad. Thanks for sharing.

Safe at last...this poor 1.75 lb kitten we named SMURF was found dyed in purple ink with multiple bite wounds & deep lacerations - appears to have been used as a chew toy for a larger animal / dog. He was rescued today from SJACC & transported to Nine Lives by Deb C. ( thanks Deb !) for medical care. After a full body shave, multiple baths, wound care & antibiotic treatment, this poor little 7 week old little boy is resting on his warm heating pad
Thanks again to SJACC and Deb C for your partnership that allows us to help these beautiful helpless kittens! All shelters should work together to save lives!
This is why Nine Lives Foundation is a truly no-kill shelter.
