Even Europe’s humanitarian superpower is turning its back on refugees

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/even-sweden-is-turning-its-back-on-refugees/2015/12/30/6d7e8454-a405-11e5-8318-bd8caed8c588_story.html

MALMO, Sweden — When the small, crumpled body of 3-year-old Alan Kurdi washed up on the Aegean coast Sept. 2, Europe’s humanitarian superpower sprang into action.

Sweden’s prime minister headlined gala fundraisers, Swedish celebrities starred in telethons, and a country that prides itself on doing the right thing seemed to rally as one to embrace refugees fleeing for their lives.

But after taking in more asylum seekers per capita than any other nation in Europe, Sweden’s welcome mat now lies in tatters. Overwhelmed by the human tide of 2015, the center-left government is deploying extraordinary new border controls and slashing benefits in an unmistakable signal to refugees contemplating the long trek to Sweden in the new year: Stay out.

“We’re willing to do more than anyone else,” said Swedish Migration Minister Morgan Johansson. “But even we have our limits.”

I watch the BBC and other news outlets and what is happening over there makes our problems here in the US seem like peanuts. It is heartbreaking to see all these people walking in the cold rain or huddling with their children in open fields. Over a million have crossed over into Europe and with many more on the way. I wonder how many more people the established countries can absorb. The demographics of the European countries are changed forever.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]With expected habitable land mass shrinkage, crop failures, water issues, etc, due to accelerating climate change, this is merely a tiny sip from the bottomless cup of misery that will be passed around soon enough. As the saying goes, the world "ain't seen nuthin' yet."

All countries should be making extensive, urgent preparations to accept war and climate refugees, as well as educating and equipping their own citizens to withstand what lies ahead.

Kudos to Sweden for going above and beyond. There is certainly no blame for having done their best until they reached their capacity limit. More countries should be doing the same, especially the United States, which is at least partially to blame for current Middle East chaos in the first place.

Thank you, Sweden. As a true liberal country, you have indeed done more than anyone else. It is unfortunate that the conservative-led countries on the continent have done as little as possible and have refused to do their part to help the refugees.

Even liberal countries have to smart about how they implement progressive policies. The right is always lurking to stoke a conservative backlash to these policies if they are not handled effectively. Sweden is not deporting any refugees, just not taking any more for the time being. They still have more of the per capita than any other European country.
