Saw "Concussion" this past Monday.
I also saw yaking by loud talking humans imitating pissed-off crows.
Saw (about) 12-14 commercials for anything from after-shave to Cadillac automobiles to stove-top stuffing. (I paid to watched commercials??)
Watched so many upcoming events I can't remember one of them. Really..a complete blur.
Watched a "sign-of-the-times" stuff...don't talk during the movie...don't make noise during the movie...don't stay on your phone during the movie or texting same. Don't throw things during the movie. (Don't THROW things??..WTF??) Where in the hell did that come from?
Then came the best part. A voice started talking soft along with the transcription..something like "Look around you. If you notice any suspicious individuals, please report them to the manager." Oh brother, I can just hear the poor manager. (Great, just great, here comes another paranoid asshole who thinks anybody with a beard is going to probably plan to fly an airplane into this lousy, stinking theater)
Finally after 53 minutes, the actual movie kinda' started. They announced like it was a big surprise. (big Fanfare...Loud trumpets...TA-TA-TATA-TATATATATA...WELCOME to ACME GROUP THEATERS (Welcome??..I've been bored out of my mind for almost an hour and my ass feels like it's going to fall off).. YES...YES...THE MOVIE IS GOING TO START NOW. GET YOUR POPCORN OUT OF OTHER PEOPLE'S SEATS and blah, blah..
THEN the movie started at 55 minutes after the "Movie-Starting Time" Yeah
The movie was very good. The experience..not so much.

(14,449 posts)I saw Daddy's Home and it was great. Saw Joy.....heh. Wanted to love it but it was ok at best. So due to that my experience in Daddy's Home even with a full crowd was awesome.

(14,449 posts)Concussion may not even make what Daddy's Home made its first weekend. Although I am glad you liked it. I'll see it on amazon prime when it gets there.

(14,449 posts)Nothing new is coming out this weekend but hateful eight expands. Not sure how much I really want to see that. I did see meeting the coopers (I think that's the name). I enjoyed it.

(22,457 posts)you like Django Unchained? I did, but many thought it was too violent.
You sound a lot like me! I love seeing movies in the theater.
I saw 'In the Heart of the Sea'. Reviews not great but I loved it.
I also loved 'The Walk', amazing movie.

(23,720 posts)We still have one in Dearborn but I haven't even been there in years. Going to the movies is a pain in the ass. The noise bothers me the most. There was one I didn't mind going to years ago, you could rent out their private viewing room. It wasn't expensive back then, just a few dollars more than a regular ticket.
Nevernose
(13,081 posts)And that's been at least fifty years. The only difference now is that the slide shows have sound, so welcome to The Talkies. Theaters don't actually make much money, and almost nothing on ticket sales; the profit is in the incidentals, like popcorn, 3d glasses, and the commercials in between shows.
Once upon a time, I was a projectionist and general manager of a movie theater. You'd be amazed at the stuff people try and pull. Crack smoking, child molesting, you name it, people tried it. Granted, it's not like the warning advertisement is going to stop people from smoking crack or exposing themselves to families, but I guess they feel it's better than nothing.
Most of the good theaters in our area now have assigned seating (yay!), so you don't actually have to show up until five minutes after the trailers start.

I find this hard to believe? 55 minutes would push back the whole schedule.

(16,399 posts)When you run seven or eight three minute trailers.....that happens.

(16,399 posts)The place closest to me is a Regal Cinema. Endless trailers. I went to see a late show of "Lucy" a couple years ago that was supposed to start at 10PM, and the film got underway at 10:30
As I said elsewhere, I found a theater that is a mall multiplex called Cinemaworld that only runs three trailers and never runs ads after the published the start time. It seems they are only operating in Rhode Island and Florida strange enough.

(16,334 posts)I try not to show up until 20 minutes after the start time. Even then, I designate myself to be the one to buy food so I can avoid all the preview crap.

(2,810 posts)I've been to the theater once in the last 8 years and that was Star Wars. I only saw it in theaters because I wanted to see it before the plot spoilers got to me.

(111,267 posts)I haven't been to a theater in 20 years or so, got tired of people crumpling candy bar paper while talking about stuff I really didn't want to know about anyone, especially strangers, while I stuck to the floor.
If it's a good story, it'll translate well to a 20 inch screen, just sit closer.
The only one I regret not being able to see in a theater was Avatar in 3-D. Then again, every 3-D movie I've ever seen has left me with a raging headache.

(45,319 posts)I think that you should name the chain and location over and over in your OP.
1939
(1,683 posts)The OP has probably not attended a Saturday matinee full of 9-14 year old boys.
It was obligatory as the light dimmed and the screen came on to sail a dozen empty popcorn boxes up into the projector beam.
Any break in the gunfire during the cowboy movie while the hero tried to woo the heroine was met by a cascade of apple cores and candy boxes toward the screen.

(4,835 posts)Going to the theater sounds (to my wife) a lot like this "what'd he say" over and over again.
The popcorn is too expensive, most of the 'new' films are recycled stories...
Wait until it comes out on disk and rent it. They get to disk quickly these days.

(65,393 posts)"Star Wars," superhero/comic book franchise movies, etc.) If a movie has dialogue that I actually think will matter, I watch it on TV with closed captioning when that is possible. Sometimes I watch on TV a movie I have already seen in a theater and thus learn if the dialogue I missed the first time through.
I also attend movies in theater with a well-trained friend who will instantly do a quick summary of important dialogue if I tap his arm.
tblue37
(65,393 posts)words, as it so often does. I am severely hearing impaired, but with hearing aids and my TV volume up all the way I can catch about 60% of the dialogue--except when that doggoned background music drowns it out.
Blanks
(4,835 posts)I pity people who have to rely on closed captioning on the tv because a lot of times, they aren't even close.
tblue37
(65,393 posts)exactly does it for DVDs/videos. The ccis fine.
Live TV captioning can be iffy, but otherwise cc is okay. I couldn't manage without it.
Blanks
(4,835 posts)Not only is the captioning good, but the text is transparent and doesn't cover up the movie.
It is really just TV cc that sucks. Even Netflix and Hulu are pretty good.

(16,399 posts)I found one, 45 minutes from my house. It's still a giant cinemaplex showing all the latest films.
Only three trailers.
No commercials.
A few announcements inviting you to the food stand.
The movie starts on time.

(18,585 posts)I pause when I want, I come back to it when I want.
No assholes talking on the phone, texting with a gi-fucking-normous pad that lights up a circle of seats like 5 deep around them.
No kids crying, screaming, jumping up, beating my seat, running up and down the aisles..
No teenagers sniggling, chatting, whispering, goofing off.
Fuck that shit.

(23,156 posts)I almost always go to the first showing of the day on a weekday. Theaters, at least where I live, are never full then.
The start time listed is when the previews begin, and typically last anywhere from five to fifteen minutes. Knowing that, and knowing the theater will never be very full, I generally show up at the box office right at the supposed start time, then go buy my popcorn (I usually smuggle in a bottle of water) and find a seat in time to watch a couple more previews. Then the movie starts.
I suppose someone who rarely goes, or as some here on DU have proudly said have not been in a theater in 25 years, doesn't quite know the system. But it's not difficult, and while I happily use Netflix and Amazon Prime to watch movies at home, there are just some (in my opinion) that need to be seen on the big screen.

(100,079 posts)I saw a special screening of the Hateful Eight there and it was awesome - *NO* previews or commercials. Although I've seen other movies there and they have a "3 preview per screening" rule. It's sweet. Definitely worth the extra cost of a ticket and trip over going to the Edwards theater that's close to my house.

(86,643 posts)movies to become available to play on my laptop. I can wait, there's no movie so important that I will put up with all the theater issues and rude audience members. What I recall from my last couple of theater experiences was that the picture was usually out of focus and the sound too loud.
I did go to a theater at my alma mater last year with my best friend, but that was attended mostly by faculty so they were better behaved, and it was a cool documentary, "Tracks".
Other than that, it's not worth my time or $$.
