BTW it is 18 degrees there right now.
http://www.wunderground.com/weather-forecast/zmw 7720.1.99999 forecast for the next 10 days
And this is kind of what the area looks like .... just add snow.
Cut their power, water, food, cell phones, and they will be out PDQ
That wildlife area hosts migratory waterfowl in the spring and fall but right now you have a
whole lot of nothing there except for jack rabbits, coyotes, and antelopes. This area is high
or cold desert and it gets cold and nasty in the winter so I agree w/cutting their electricity and
their water (if they have a well no power = no water) and close them off and they will be out in
no time.
BTW malheur national wildlife refuge is a very successful fed. program started by Teddy Roosevelt.

(1,307 posts)What a crock that is. If this were the left they would have went in in riot gear but since it's a bunch of right wing gun nuts they will monitor.

(86,678 posts)at -20F!!! Lots of stuff breaks at that temp and colder.
Cutting out communications is essential, even if they do have food and water. The locals aren't thrilled with their presence so they will have that to consider as well. Very few supporters for these kkklowns... but I'm sure we'll be hearing more BS from the Rs and fux.

(86,678 posts)but a nasty cold snap would be a good thing right about now. I'm up on the continental divide, one state away, and live with bitter cold much of the winter, I would wish this upon those idiots, like a couple weeks' worth, that would make life really hard for them.
Botany
(70,537 posts)15 degrees w/a 25 mph wind can be brutal ...... BTW I hope they arrest every one of these
idiots because a couple @ Bundy's 1st "hold out" went on to ambush and kill two cops.

(86,678 posts)When I was in college back in the 1990s (I was a late bloomer and went to college in my mid 30s) my polisci prof was documenting the Bundy mess from its earliest point and we discussed it regularly since it was in our back yard so to speak. I don't know why the feds never took care of business back then. The Bundy family has probably cost US taxpayers several million$$ over the decades.

(34,661 posts)compromised by local Politicians to play the story in favor of Tea Party and Militia members. We had a County Sheriff's election going on at that time and one of the Candidates has ties to the Bundy Family. Plus a member of the Metro Police Dept. What could go wrong did go wrong. All one has to do is look at who were the players. Our County Attorney is such a compromised dupe, appears he does just enough Justice to get reelected.

(86,678 posts)occupy a lot of territory out in these states, they are the majority of law enforcement, judicial system and landholders. If you aren't mormon in most of these places, good luck getting and/or holding a job. It's like that in ID, Parts of MT, NV, UT, WY and parts of CO, WA, OR and the Dakotas. They consider themselves a "family", many outsiders in the region see them as a cult.
Wellstone ruled
(34,661 posts)tells the story of Bunkerville. Yes,what you say as to the local culture, been there and done that. Do know the same crowd has a significant present in the Burns area. As for the Dakotas, just in one small area, and the local County Commissioners are trying to squeeze them out. They had their Compound's up for sale this past summer. Some issues as to water rights and the State said,no way are you going to increase your pump rate.
And yes, many of the Metro Officers and other agents at Bunkerville belong to the Cult. Tough one for many.

(86,678 posts)for 14 years... and now in a mormon dominated part of MT... I'll be relocating in the next year since there are no jobs for nonmormons. It's all part of what they consider their zion.
And this interactive map of mormon density by county in the US of A:

Separation of church and state, a necessity in our world no matter what century we're talking about.

(86,678 posts)While I was at Idaho State U. I saw it (ISU and the Pocatello area) transform from a moderately liberal community to one overwhelmed by mormons. But they are getting overwhelmed by folks from the middle east now and it's a little sketchy around there right now.

(34,661 posts)Noticed the the LDS Church issued a statement a few hours ago condemning the occupation of the Wetland Preserve near Burns, and the verbal association to their Moroni or any other Church doctrine. Interesting to say the least, even Reid is keeping his message vague at best and he sees his error from the Bunkerville mess.

(10,718 posts)should be warming up a little over freezing for the next few days, but rain and snow mixed. They probably have camp trailers and so forth, of the sort that hunters here usually use in deer season. Good for a little while, but not something that anyone would find enjoyable for very long.

(7,754 posts)that is not a good thing. It never gets that warm, just wetter and windier. They will run out of propane and then their only option is to start cutting down trees for fuel. I personally hope they do. The stand off may last for a while but they will be in prison for a long time once it's over.

(10,164 posts)I certainly support cutting them off from the power grid, but since they have generators, what that will do is force them to burn their store of fuel faster. I've never noticed a well at that facility, but I've never had reason to look for one in my several visits there. I'd be surprised if there weren't one. There's a large holding pond on the property (which shouldn't have iced over so badly that its too hard to access), and an actual spring about 1500 feet away. Combine that with stone buildings and very open fields of fire surrounding the little compound, and you have a very well-selected location for this idiocy.
I really fear for that facility. Yeah, I know: they're only buildings. But not only are they wonderful old buildings constructed decades ago by the CCC, the facility is also the center of refuge operations. That doesn't matter a lot in the dead of winter, with the majority of the refuge's animal residents elsewhere (or year-round local species that don't need much managing), but there will be work needed to prepare for Spring and the migrations.

(12,530 posts)Generators run on gasoline, typically, so the generator(s) has/have to be outside. So a gunshot or a soldier with a pair of wire cutters could do the job. These people can be waited out, but there's no sense in waiting longer than necessary. Also, at the end of all of this, they should be presented a bill with every man-hour wasted on them, to go along with criminal charges.

(1,241 posts)a whole shit load of them. The, not healthy, the older ones and the sissies who have had a sheltered life. They are all not as tough as they think they are. What will they do when the generator won't start or ice in their gas. How prepared are they for a winter stand off??????????????????????????????????? Cut off their power and just wait them out. Arrest them as they surrender, one at a time.

(6,409 posts)They occupied a wildlife refuge, so they have no idea what they're doing. Just go away, keep the public and the media out. As long as it opens back up in time for the spring bird migration, everybody will be happy. There is a hot spring on the south side of Harney Lake, but I assume they're not anywhere near there.

(111,292 posts)since Bundy's jackass son has vowed martyrdom and chase all the cameras and microphones away, off to a safe distance where their telephoto lenses can capture the idiots long distance but interviews for grandstanding yokels are no longer possible. Combine that with canceling their cell phone services and they'll be out of there pretty quickly, especially once the chips and Mountain Dew run out.

The man and woman said to have shot and killed two police officers and a third person in Las Vegas Sunday bragged that they had been involved in the recent standoff with the federal government at Cliven Bundys Nevada ranch, neighbors of the pair have told local Nevada papers. And early reports suggest the couple may have been motivated by anti-government extremism.
The couple shot two Las Vegas police officers who were eating lunch at a pizza restaurant, then minutes later killed a third person at a nearby Wal-Mart. The woman then killed the man before turning the gun on herself, in what police have said was an apparent suicide pact.
A law enforcement source with knowledge of the situation told NBC the suspects were Jerad Miller and Amanda Miller. The two slain officers have been identified by police as Alyn Beck, 41, and Igor Soldo, 31. The Clark County Coroners Office identified the person killed at the Wal-Mart as Joseph Robert Wilcox, 31.
