With the State House once occupied by Mitt Romney as his backdrop, Obama strategist David Axelrod on Thursday denounced what he described as Romneys failed record as Massachusetts governor.
After selling himself to Massachusetts as an economic savior, the Massachusetts record was alarmingly weak, Axelrod said. As youve heard, under Governor Romney, the state was 47th in job creation -- fourth from the bottom.
Governor Romneys singular claim to the presidency is that his career in the corporate buyout business imbued him with insights that will grow our economy, creat jobs, reduce the size of government and reduce debt, Axelrod said. And if that sounds familiar to you, its because the people of Massachusetts have heard it all before.

It wasnt happenstance that Massachusetts struggled under Romney, Axelrod said at a press conference in Boston, noting several negative statistics on the states performance during Romneys four years as governor (more on that here). He brought the orientation of a financial engineer whose goal was to make money, added Axelrod.
This may work in the world of leveraged buyouts and quick scores, but its not how you build for the future, Axelrod said. Romney economics didnt work then, and it wont work now.
In contending with (the) protesters, Axelrod repeatedly gestured to them over the course of his remarks and told them that they were afraid of the truth.
You can shout down speakers, but its hard to Etch-A-Sketch the truth away, he said, referring to Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstroms ill-conceived Etch A Sketch comment during the primary season.
Axelrod also quipped: These may be the only Romney voters in Massachusetts.
