The Seal Of Whitesboro, NY, Depicts A White Man Strangling A Native American

Residents vote Monday on whether to change it. C'mon people.

Upstate New Yorkers will hit the polls Monday to vote on whether to change an off-putting village seal that depicts a white settler strangling a Native American.
Whitesboro officials kicked off the New Year by sending out postcards to the village's 3,000 residents, alerting them of the vote.
....
Surrounded by the town's name, the round logo at the heart of the controversy shows two men grappling against a grassy horizon. The man with the upper hand, so to speak, has chalk-white skin and flowing hair. His mouth is clenched in determination, and he is wearing tan garments.
The dark-skinned man in his grasp is not wearing a shirt but has a feather in his close-cropped hair. His mouth is open in anguish, and he seems ready to collapse.
Nimey-Olney noted that the seal has changed over the years so that the settler's hands are on the Indian's shoulders and not his neck.....

guy strangling a Native American.

The "Schitt's Creek" logo (see above) wasn't about a brother engaging in unnatural acts with his sister (He's HOLDING her so she doesn't FALL IN, you see!!!!) but Eugene Levy didn't see it that way, either!!!!

Some situations are just a Perfect Storm of Hot Mess--this is one of them. Change the logo now, laugh about it later!

who was adopted into the Oneida tribe. The seal depicts a wrestling match between White and an Oneida chief.

Try to do a little research people. It might not be so bad to change the seal, but to object to the name is sheer ignorance. Unless you think all persons named White should change their surnames. How about those named Brown? Or Black? Or Green? Or any other name that someone can decide to take offense to?

That imagery does not call up the sense of "wrestling" at all.

More to the point, it does not depict the type of wrestling that Indians do --this is according to a Native American quoted in this article: http://www.uticaod.com/article/20090104/News/301049981 AND the Indian depicted in the current seal is not wearing the proper headdress.

This "historical seal" was crafted in the 1900s, and the one currently in use was redone in the 1970s to take the hands of Mister White OFF the NECK of the Native gentleman after the town was sued by a Native group.

Oneida Nation Council Turtle Clan representative Clint Hill, however, said the description of the seal’s portrayal did not seem patently offensive, although he had not seen it in person.
The Oneidas typically had good relationships with area settlers, he said, and “Indian wrestling,” in which opponents place their feet together and use only one arm to try to throw the other person, is a common game among friends.
“With the so-called Indian wrestling, you just knocked the person off balance,” he said. “We used to do it all the time as kids.”
If anything, Hill said, he would want the image changed to more accurately portray the wrestling style and to show the proper headdress for the Indian in the image.
An Oneida would wear one with two feathers pointing up and one pointing down, he said.
