(6,145 posts)Yeah. Our party needs to look in the mirror and develop some values but if Romney wins we'll be facing an activist conservative bench for the next generation.
We've already seen the damage from citizens united and that was just kind of a bite sized taste of the future served on a toothpick. Maybe it's too late already or maybe not but with three more devout Republicans sitting on the court there is no turning back.

(1,362 posts)Not to mention throwing every big banker out of his administration. Then there's universal health care, going after corruption and, stimulating the economy to create jobs.
ANY QUESTIONS? BTW, that "any questions" meme is sarcastic as people who ask it never care about any questions.

(56,828 posts)out of spite for the Democrats. I only think he'd step voluntarily down if he knew the president was a Republican.
Of course, he could pass away.
Kennedy stepping down would be big, though.
And, if Obama loses, I would hope Breyer hangs on until Dems are in office again.

(3,596 posts)of the Presidency and/or the Senate....
The Court shapes our lives in fundamental ways that acts of Congress don't. They determine whether a police search is allowed, what rights a suspect has, whether a city can confiscate your property to sell to a private party for profit. They decide if African-Americans and Caucasians can marry, whether contraception must be legal, whether the state can intrude into the bedroom, the uterus, the room of a dying cancer victim.
These are the "big" items. Make no doubt about it, a victory by RMoney would be bad enough but a RMoney presidency combined with Republican control of the Senate would be devastating. The conservative majority on the Court would be further strengthened for at least 15 to 20 years.
We would see a further erosion to Roe v. Wade. The Republicans are not serious about overturning Roe V. Wade because it is a wedge issue they can use with the knuckle-draggers of their base. Corporations and the wealthy would continue their domination to the point of outright Oligarchy. We might see a return to company towns where individuals are forced to live in company housing, buy goods at company stores, buy services from company providers, etc. all with the result of maximizing corporate profits and minimizing individual choice.
We would see further erosion of worker's rights, civil rights for minorities of all stripes including the LGBT community. We would see a destruction of laws intent on protecting the environment, providing for clean air, water, food, medicine, etc.
This would be a total victory for greed, corruption and bigotry.
Think about it. The choice is ours.

(288 posts)Just like Justices Souter and Stevens waited a whole 8 years of Bush because they wanted to make sure that their replacements would be progressive.
