(24,853 posts)A hair short of 50 years in Los Angeles... I remember seeing this poster at one of the last games they played before moving to St. Louis: "Ex-showgirl strippers shouldn't be allowed to own football teams".
Georgia had Carroll Rosenbloom killed. Then moved his team.

Assholes that marry Walmart heiresses shouldn't be allowed to own teams either I guess.

(24,853 posts)I'm sure that which brings me joy tonight instills the same loss in many others. I have a bit of guilt over that.

(8,419 posts)My dad was at the 1945 championship game, he hated the Rams the minute they left Cleveland. I bet I heard the story 100 times how the city supported the Rams, then they left. I grew up in Phx and left shortly before the Cardinals bolted for Phx. I go back to visit and the old man proudly brings out his season tickets.
I wait about an hour and ask how is that different from the Rams bolting Cleveland, it takes him a minute but finally spurts out they won a championship damn it.

(24,853 posts)I don't think they're even slated to decide until after next season, although I may have read that incorrectly.

(8,419 posts)Chargers get 100 million towards SD stadium if they stay. (I think the offer is for the Raiders too)
I am sticking with my original predictions, the NFL couldn't do squat to stop the Rams. They want SD to stay put and the Raiders can do whatever makes them happy.

(14,176 posts)Local CBS news in LA reported @6ish that the Raiders would get $500 million to upgrade the stadium. And at that point, the Rams were the only sure thing. Allegedly. Then Pro Football Talk, which I trust, reported that the Chargers wold be coming to LA too.
I guess I have to wait for more smoke to clear. I really can't see why a divided LA market would be smarter for the NFL than a team in LA and another in SD, but....

(8,419 posts)I am hoping it is a bluff with SD. Both teams could use new stadiums, but leaving SD seems like a bad plan. I think the NFL feels SD will provide funding and Oakland won't, thus the Chargers getting the option first.

(78,249 posts)The bigger mystery is where the Raiders will play next season, and the possibilities are seemingly endless but may point to a choice between staying in Oakland or moving to San Antonio.
The Raiders' lease at the Coliseum in Oakland has expired, which means the team is free to move anywhere....
In 2014, the Raiders met with San Antonio officials about a potential move. While many shrugged that off at the time, there is now a feeling that such a move is possible. According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, the Raiders have already secured land in the Austin/San Antonio area for a potential stadium. With the Alamodome already in place, this strongly suggests that the Raiders could be playing in Texas as soon as next season.

(8,419 posts)Issue is we would have to listen to the lame Texans brag about stealing a CA team.
No issue with most people I have met in SA, nor the city, Dallas is another story.

(6,398 posts)If the Chargers move, they have to pay the NFL a relocation fee...plus share the costs of the new stadium (along with the profits...if any). The real moolah is going to be the entertainment zone around the area which the current Rams owner will develop and will not share the profits. If they they stay put then the NFL will give them 100 Mill in helping with the stadium updates (or new stadium).
Raiders have the option to move to LA if Chargers opt out...but they have the same deal. Wouldn't be surprised if the Raiders started looking at San Antonio, TX.
So basically, move and hope you make money or stay put on more of a sure thing.
Realistically, LA can't support two NFL teams. You have two Basketball teams, an LA based Hockey and Baseball team with an Orange County Hockey and Baseball team 30 minutes (no traffic...which is rare) down the road. And then you have two College Football teams which has been filling the "need" for awhile.....and all this will still be a big draw. Economics just not there for two NFL teams.

(18,101 posts)I'm also sad for the fans in St. Louis.
I just don't understand the strong attachment for a mediocre team with a habit of leaving their fans.

(9,901 posts)Watched them in the L. A. Coliseum as a young boy, then at Anahiem Statium as a young man, never liked the Radiers, so I am happy to have my favorite team back home again.
Now all I have to do is figure out two things; How to scrape together enough for season tickets. And then how to talk the wife in to letting me buy season tickets!

(8,419 posts)I remember a few games at the Big A, one Monday Night game was about 80% Niner fans. I see the Cardinals are having the same problem in Phx., even with a good team a lot of tickets end up in the hands of the visitors.

(18,101 posts)The death is being investigated as a suspected suicide, according to press release from the department.
Phillips, 40, was facing the possible death penalty in the alleged murder of his former cellmate at Kern Valley State Prison. At a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, a Superior Court judge ruled there was "sufficient cause to believe'' Phillips committed murder, according to court records, which cleared the way for a trial that could have ended with Phillips getting the death penalty.
<snip>
Phillips was the star running back on the University of Nebraskas national championship teams in 1994 and 1995, and a first-round pick, sixth overall, in the 1996 NFL draft. He played for three seasons with the St. Louis Rams, Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers. In 2009, he was sentenced to 31 years in prison for two separate incidents driving his car into three teenagers and assaulting an ex-girlfriend.

I can't recall why they moved to STL in the first place? Probably over a new stadium.

(18,101 posts)Carolina and Jacksonville got the expansion teams and the Rams took advantage of the situation and got a sweet deal in St. Louis. We built them a brand new dome that we'll be paying for for another six years.

(33,688 posts)and I've been an NFL fan for more than 45 years. Indianapolis Colts, yes, St Louis Rams, no.
I do remember the LA Lambs having to journey from sunny SoCal to the frozen tundra of the long-gone Metropolitan Stadium to play the Vikings in the playoffs. One steely glare from Bud Grant was enough to send them running.

(17,865 posts)I am waiting to see how the actual funding goes for the new LA stadium. Right now the Rams owner seems to be proposing a plan with little if any public money involved. I salute that approach if it is so. St. Louis tried to keep the Rams with $400M in public money (they still owe $100M on their last bad deal on the current stadium).
