The U.S. economy created a scant 69,000 jobs in May, much lower than expected and all but confirming that the U.S. economy is heading into its third consecutive spring slowdown.
The Labor Department reported Friday that the unemployment rate edged up to 8.2 percent, its first increase in 11 months, as American employers fretted over Europe, higher pump prices and the persistent problems in the housing market.
Non-farm payrolls rose by 69,000, the lowest increase in a year and well below the 150,000 jobs that economists had expected. The previous two months' numbers were also revised lower, adding to the concerns about a sputtering recovery.
"It's an awful number. Not only is it awful in its numerical terms, it comes at a very skittish time in the markets because of the European crisis," said Rick Meckler, president of Libertyview Capital Management.

(34,179 posts)After all, 69,000 jobs in a month doesn't even keep up with new growth in the labor force. You need about 125,000-150,000 jobs per month to just keep up with labor force growth.
So yeah, job growth, along with the economy, has all but stalled.

I blame Boner.
I agree with you that these numbers suck and I blame the Repigs for them.

(34,179 posts)In the heart of election season. Not only introduce it, but fight for it, hard, even if it goes down to defeat. It would draw an excellent line of contrast and comparison in the middle of this election season. It would show that the president is willing to fight for the people of this country. Expecting your typical voter to extend their memory back over two years and deal with political minutia is a mistake, you need to play it out on the big stage, now, and make an election year impression.

(14,180 posts)channel the ghost of Harry S. Truman's 1948 campaign against the 1946 'Do-Nothing Congress.'
Obama still thinks he can make nice with the Repigs. They need to be smashed into oblivion and thrust into the political wilderness for the next 40 years. Not sure Obama's the man to do it.

(27,461 posts)that is the last thing I want them to do. If anything, the media has been downplaying the economic suffering.

(1,033 posts)The blame needs to go onto the do-nothing Congress, specifically the do-nothing GOP, and Democrats need to fight back against GOP talking points hard.
