Bloomberg defends his large cup ban on National Doughnut Day

Sorry if this is a repeat, but geez

http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/01/on-today-bloomberg-defends-his-anti-soda-plan/

Forget Bloomberg vs. soda. On Friday morning, which Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg proclaimed as Doughnut Day in New York, it was Bloomberg vs. Lauer.

The “Today” show’s genial anchor, Matt Lauer, welcomed Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg onto the program on Friday with a sobering figure: 83 percent of voters in an online NBC poll concluded that the mayor’s proposed ban on large sodas would not help reduce obesity.

<snip>

Finally, Mr. Lauer pointed out that the Bloomberg administration issued a proclamation on Friday in support of National Doughnut Day. The proclamation has been cited as evidence of hypocrisy by critics of the mayor’s soda proposal.

“It sounds ridiculous,” Mr. Lauer said.

“C’mon, it doesn’t sound ridiculous,” Mr. Bloomberg replied.

“One doughnut’s not going to hurt you. In moderation, most things are O.K.”

Even if they are not banning soda all together.

I hope the ban doesn't happen. That's the kind of nonsense that happens in other parts of the country.

I had my Dunkin today with my large tea and they were pushing the free doughnuts today. I'm sure they are doing it to hook people in and not just to celebrate this "one" doughnut.

Bloomberg goes to say that they will not limit how much soda you could buy but that you would have to get it to go in multiple smaller cups. So we're going to stay fat but create more landfill waste?

Of course you're right that they are trying to find new customers. I love the KK Glazed or the Dunkin Frosted doughnuts. I know how good they are and how much I like them, but I still don't get them every day.

You have to buy more cups, so instead of getting 1 20oz soda you will get 2 12oz or 16oz. Genius!

I think the ban would probably cut soda sales long term, but I'm not sure I want to live in a place that does those things.

By forcing you to buy two 16-ounce, they're creating income for Coke, right? And that creates jobs, right? Get with the program!

He doesn't see a disconnect? I submit that shows he's pretty disconnected.
