started getting emails from them asking for money. I only give directly to candidates. Just wondering if they are legit.

At a first approximation, I never trust groups that suddenly start asking me for money. I tried searching, but one never knows who is providing the results on a website.
On one search I got this! ... to be leery of them.

(60,010 posts)PTP is different from other PACs because we are the only PAC that devotes all of our resources to professional voter turnout efforts. Typically, PACs use their funds to either contribute to a candidates campaign (that candidate then uses the money as they see fit) or they invest in Independent Expenditures (they pay for TV ads or mail pieces that promotes a candidates position or attacks a candidates opponent). On the other hand, PTPs sole purpose is to have personalized, one-on-one conversations with voters to understand their concerns and illustrate the importance of voting". While there are a variety of PACs that seek to organize volunteers to undertake these voter contact efforts, PTP will rely solely on our army of professionally trained field representatives. In this way, PTP is a new and unique PAC that will add to, not compete with, the resources available to other PACs.
PTP is a Non-Qualified PAC, and therefore cannot coordinate our efforts with individual campaigns or party committees like the DCCC
Harry Pascal was the treasurer of Illinois congressional candidate Dan Seals campaign.
So, they sound like a Dem. outfit, who wants to be paid for door to door voter turnout in important districts.
The same technique that Rove used with Bush in 2004.

(1 post)I received a flier from them that informed me I had only voted in two of the last four general elections. This information is not factual. I assume that they are only looking at voting records from the state in which I currently reside. I was registered to vote in another state before and voted by absentee ballot from overseas.
In addition to being factually incorrect, I found the flier intimidating. The gist of the flier is:
"Did you know? Who you vote for is secret, but whether or not you vote is a matter of public record. This year we're sending you and your neighbors those records to help you keep track of your civic participation.
Why is your vote important? We all know our democracy works best when everyone votes -- including you. How would your friends, family and neighbors feel if they saw your voting record and knew you were an infrequent voter? Do your part and make a plan to vote on Tuesday, November 8."
I sent a letter to this organization telling them that first, their information about my voting record was incorrect. I also told them that I felt their flier was intimidating, almost as though they were trying to shame me into voting. I told them that I felt they should change their approach because trying to intimidate and shame people to get them to vote could backfire. The way to get people to vote is by doing what I've already done this election season -- spend hours working with the local Democratic Party apparatus making phone calls and going door to door.

(1 post)So, I received an email from this PAC earlier today asking me to contribute money to them in exchange for the honor of signing a petition they're organizing about the Trump administration's worrying ties to Russia. The email made clear a donation was required to sign the petition and I was pretty taken aback. First I did some high-level digging on their website and concluded they seemed legit, so decided to respond to the email. I told them I was tapped out financially due to recurring monthly contributions to a handful of organizations, but explained:
I'm also trying to "contribute" by making calls, signing petitions, and attending protests. I'm frankly angered by this condition of yours, and also question the optics and intent of "pay for play" participation in a grassroots-style petition by a Political Action Committee, of all things. I get that PACs are a necessary evil in today's political world, but I think you can do better.
Really, I assumed I was just screaming into the void, but then got a response from them within minutes:
Despite you're likely having already unsubscribed /sic/ from our emails, we apologize for any confusion relating to our polls and surveys. No one is required to make a donation to our organization in order to have their responses included in our tabulations*. After answering all of the questions, or just a few, simply press submit and those responses will be registered and tabulated. Moreover, we use some to all of the data these emailed surveys and polls produce to further refine the focus of our face-to-face encounters with voters in these races and occasionally publish their results on our website, turnoutpac.org.
*emphasis, by the way, is theirs and ends up being... funny.
I apologized and told them I would make sure to sign the petition. I even volunteered my services as a copy editor because a) if they don't require payment, they shouldn't be sending out communications with buttons labeled "Donate now to sign"; and b) I've just started looking for volunteer opportunities and thought one might have just fallen in my lap. But, guess what happened? I clicked that button in the email and the first page requires you pledge a payment and you can't continue to the next screen if you don't!
So, at best I think their communication team is grossly incompetent and their fundraising approach oddly sketchy. At worst, though, I think there might be something fishy going on with this PAC. Either way, I suppose, I'm a bit of a gullible fool.
(Edited because if you're going to be snarky about an organization's desperate need for copy editors, your rant should probably be grammatical.)

(1 post)I also received emails from this organization. I clicked their link and began to fill out their survey. At the end of the survey, there were two options - one to donate $5 and another to donate more. I clicked the link to donate $5. It brought me to a page that indicated I was about to donate $25. Also, the default on a check box making my donation a monthly contribution was automatically checked. My fear is that some people would not look closely and ended up donating $25 on a monthly basis. For some people, $5 is a huge amount of spare money to give. So, I emailed the organization to take issue. Here is their response:
"Thank you for contacting us and for sharing your views. I regret that you're upset because of the default setting you describe. Of course, I'm sure you know that if any donor wished, he or she could simply uncheck that box and commit to a single donation only. Given your interest in PTP, I urge you to investigate its website, turnoutpac.org."
I consider their techniques to be the same as "bait and switch". I will not be donating.
Here is further information on their expenditures: https://www.opensecrets.org/pacs/expenditures.php?cycle=2016&cmte=C00580068

(1 post)Hi all,
I just signed up for an account here just to say thank you.
In the past week I've been getting these crazy emails as well.
I have trying to find a way to verify these emails asking me to vote.
They are all creepy.
Certainly these people don't know what they are doing.
I will never vote using these emails nor would I ever donate money based on these emails.
Thank you.
