Damn! I'm getting out of my basement office and going upstairs where it's warmer.
Sheesh!

(146,308 posts)We have below zero weather. Weather does not equal climate. It never has.

(6,282 posts)However, it is true that climate change will ultimately affect weather.
It is a mistake to extrapolate any individual weather events into a statement on climate change.

(65,616 posts)is my point. They did not say climate, they said climate change. There is a difference.

(6,282 posts)Climate change relates to climate, I fail to see the problem in pointing out that weather events can not be extrapolated to general statements about climate, nor about climate change.
Rex
(65,616 posts)You posted the opposite of what they meant, just clearing that up for you since you seemed confused by their statement.

(6,282 posts)Weather change is assured. Climate Change is a scientific question.

(65,616 posts)Republicans would all rather let us freeze to death, then admit to any wrongness on their part. However ain't that the crux of it all with the GOP - they NEVER admit to being wrong on anything.
Stuck in stupid.

(28,340 posts)right up by the Canadian border, all bummed out because I planned to do some cross-country skiing today but it's too warm. We had a cute little layer of powder yesterday but now it's all a big slushy mess. It's 39 degrees outside and our projected highs for the next 16 days range from 35 to 41 with mostly rain/snow mixture predicted every day.
I'm happy for the precipitation after the hideous fire season we had last year but damn. It's January. I would like to ski.

(33,688 posts)Back in December 1983 it didn't even get above zero for two solid weeks and bottomed out the night before Xmas eve with a nice, balmy 34 below. With wind chills of 86 below. That was one night you really did need to bring in the brass monkeys.

(115,693 posts)There were also a few winters in the '70s when the brass monkeys would have suffered from serious shrinkage. I don't remember what year it was but I distinctly recall being out one evening with friends when it was somewhere approaching -30 and we were just fucking dying just walking from the car to the concert hall. People who live in warmer climates probably have never experienced air that actually makes your face hurt.

(33,688 posts)Your face hurts by the time you've walked half a block outside.
The only sensible thing to do when it's that farking cold is to go back inside, pop a bottle of wine, start cooking an empty-the-fridge pot of curry that makes the house smell great for a few hours, grab the cat and watch a movie.

(1,958 posts)The Monday of that week it got down to 41° below and my car actually started. By Thursday when it was time head home for Christmas, nope (even though I started it and warmed it up twice a day.) I called for a wrecker with a generator to jump start the car. That's what he did. He wrecked the starter. I ended up removing the battery and kept it hooked up to a trickle charger in my dorm room. If I needed to go somewhere and I could not find somebody to give me a ride to the long-term parking lot, I carried the battery ten blocks and hooked it up. Modern cars would go haywire if you treated them like that.
That was aong winter. I didn't have the $200 for a new starter.

(33,688 posts)Fortunately my late dad somehow came into possession of a gargantuan battery charger that he mounted in the garage. The thing was the size of a case of beer in bottles and could charge 20 heavy-equipment batteries simultaneously. Slapped it on at a slow trickle every time I drove into the garage for several weeks and the car always started.

(4,259 posts)and temperatures have been relatively mild. 30s during the day, teens and 20s at night.
The absence of snow is very unusual. Frequently, we get a good storm or 2 by Thanksgiving.
There was a mass roosting of red-winged blackbirds in a setback along the Ct River. THAT is unprecedented.

This morning I went out and this is what my car reported;
And that was before any wind chill.
