Every time a famous musician dies, I think about Buddy Holly.

Glenn Frey had a pretty good, reasonably long life. David Bowie as well. I appreciate both for their contributions, very much.

But Buddy Holly -- had just begun. He was 22, and in love. He'd only been a professional musician for four years and had already written a string of hits, gorgeous music that will live forever. It's all we get of him, period, forever. Like Robert Johnson, one brief flash. Lighting in a bottle.

I wasn't born quite yet when he died. But I remember Buddy Holly.

The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens, and Buddy Holly all on the same plane. My older sister and I had those little 45 rpm records of each along with many others. The day the music died.

It was very cold here in Illinois, too. I remember it, because even though I was young, I had heard quite a bit of his music.

It is hard to imagine what might have been.

I'm still not over Janis Joplin and Jimmie Hendrix.

So many people who were just loaded with talent have passed on way too early. Heaven must really be a rockin place.

"The Day the Music Died".

It's impossible to guess just how much influence Buddy Holly would have had in the music world had he lived. He might well still be alive.

arrest of the one-hit wonder and lyrical genius who immortalized a certain era in the genre. I thought it was odd, anyway. And I certainly hope this wave subsides.

He gave up his seat to another member of the band who had the flu, and took the tour bus.
