He seems to think God is his pollster.

When Tapper asked him if he regretted making his notorious remark that he’d never had to ask God for forgiveness, he replied:

“I have a great relationship with God. I have a great relationship with the Evangelicals. In fact, nationwide, I’m up by a lot, I’m leading everybody. But I like to be good. I don’t like to have to ask for forgiveness. And I am good. I don’t do a lot of things that are bad. I try to do nothing that is bad. I live a very different life than probably a lot of people would think. And I have a very great relationship with God and I have a very great relationship with Evangelicals. I think that’s why I’m doing so well with Iowa.”

Pure genius! He can adapt that spiel to any topic, any situation. Doesn't have to think, doesn't have to reason. And the best part is, nobody has the balls to point out to him that he gives the same speech no matter who he is talking to or what the subject is.

"But I like to be good. I don’t like to have to ask for forgiveness. And I am good. I don’t do a lot of things that are bad. I try to do nothing that is bad."

Forgiveness of sins and reliance on faith alone, instead of "being good" is the entire point of Evangelical belief. In their belief system, it is not possible to be "good", and any attempt to rely on oneself to "do nothing that is bad" is pointless, because being "bad" is a fundamental condition of humankind.

If Evangelical voters actually favor Trump after a bizarrely incongruous statement like that, then they are dumber than dirt.
