... but seriously .... have you seen the dark skies from Eastern Oregon, 30 miles from a light bulb at high elevations?

How often at night when the heavens are bright,
With the light from the glittering stars,
Have I stood there amazed and asked as I gazed,
If their glory exceeds that of ours.

Oh, I love these wild flowers in this dear land of ours,
The curlew I love to hear cry,
And I love the white rocks and the antelope flocks,
That graze on the mountain slopes high.

Oh give me a land where the bright diamond sand,
Flows leisurely down in the stream;
Where the graceful white swan goes gliding along,
Like a maid in a heavenly dream.

Then I would not exchange my home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

I spent time field working ancient rock art. There is a concentration in Lake County, some in the refuge too. Ancient inscriptions are common out there, in the Great Basin with its many lakes. The evidence of past occupations are more evident in desert, and 10,000 years of human activity leaves lots of evidence.

Vast areas out there are totally uninhabited, and the idea of a preserved primal place comes to mind (no cows), but is is scarred by fencing and grazing impact and the pristine landscape of a century ago is destroyed forever. It is never too late to preserve what we have and oppose destruction of the commons.
