J. K. Rowling "Death Eaters Walk Among Us"

British author J.K. Rowling, best known for her "Harry Potter" book series, weighed in on American politics Sunday, tweeting out a response to a controversial comment made by Katrina Pierson, the campaign spokeswoman for GOP front-runner Donald Trump.

Pierson sent out this tweet in 2012, which has been gaining traction on social media channels this week:

Perfect Obama's dad born in Africa, Mitt Romney's dad born in Mexico. Any pure breeds left? #CNNDebate

— Katrina Pierson (@KatrinaPierson) January 20, 2012

Early Sunday morning, Rowling linked to Pierson's comment in her own tweet and seemed to suggest that the Trump spokeswoman was a "Death Eater."

Death Eaters walk among us. https://t.co/tqKq1anHpf

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) January 24, 2016

The popular children's book author was invoking villains from her Harry Potter series -- "Death Eaters" -- known for their "pureblood" fervor. Purebloods, in the Harry Potter universe, are wizards (or witches) whose mother and father were both magical. Death Eaters made it their mission to eradicate any "half-bloods" or "mudbloods" who did not come from a magical family line.

throughout human history.

Yet no one calls them Siberians, they just confuse them with Indians, who have a rather distinct culture and history. Do the Siberians in current day Siberia (the natives and non-prisoner ones) have a distinct culture? I wonder, and a below thread poster mentioned tipis (not sure if that's a direct cultural correlation or just a coincidence etc.

Indians are a rather varied group and have their own issues with cultural, linguistic, political interaction among their own population, and their own history with dealing with Europeans who came uninvited and exploited the native population, intermingling the term sorta conceals all that.

The various tribes of America have a rich and varied culture that doesn't necessarily share that much commonality in beliefs etc. lumping them into another group seems to be diminish the uniqueness of their culture as well.

Pierson was born to a 15-year-old white mother and a black father; she grew up with her mother in poverty. Her mother initially gave her up for adoption, but later changed her mind.[2] Katrina had a short-lived marriage at a young age, which produced one son. In 1997, at the age of 20, she was arrested for shoplifting, to which she pleaded no contest, received deferred adjudication, and the case was then dismissed and sealed.[3] In 2006, she earned a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Texas at Dallas.[4][5]

Political career
After voting for Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, she soon joined the Tea Party movement, where she became an activist. She actively supported Ted Cruz in the 2012 Senate race in Texas and appeared on stage with him on election night.[4]

In the 2014 Texas Congressional elections, Pierson challenged Pete Sessions in the Republican primary to represent Texas' 32nd district. Her candidacy was endorsed by Rafael Cruz and Sarah Palin, while Ted Cruz offered praise, but stopped short of an endorsement. In the election, she obtained 36 percent of the vote, losing to Sessions, who received 63 percent.[6] She subsequently went on to become spokesperson for the Tea Party Leadership Fund.[4]

In January 2015, Pierson attended a meeting for Tea Party activists in Myrtle Beach with Ted Cruz. While in Myrtle Beach, she also met with Trump. She met with Trump or his aides a few more times in the spring. Pierson introduced Trump at his September campaign rally in Dallas. In November 2015, she was hired as the national spokesperson for Trump's campaign.[4] She subsequently appeared frequently on television, sometimes drawing attention in her own right.[7]

In an interview on CNN in December 2015, she wore a necklace made of bullets, creating debate on Twitter and several media mentions.[8]

In January 2016, a message Pierson had shared on Twitter about the national origins of the leading 2012 presidential election candidates came to light, garnering rebuke from many commentators.[9][10] The message stated: "Perfect Obama's dad born in Africa, Mitt Romney's dad born in Mexico. Any pure breeds left?"

Personal life
In 2015, Pierson was living in Garland, Texas, with her son Christopher, where she had founded a local Tea Party group.[5] She currently serves on the Texas Tea Party Caucus advisory committee. Pierson has previously served on several local committees, including one that advises Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

I don't get it.

No offense to the many fine people of that beautiful and fascinating part of the country, but one unfortunate response to oppression can be to embrace the worst aspects of it as a sort of camouflage defense.

I think she defended her bizarre comments about "pure breeds" by saying she has been called a "half breed" many times, (unclear by whom) which sadly could be true, although it is no excuse.

Sadder that her response seems to be to wrap herself in the same kind of malevolent intolerance she may have suffered herself.

that more and more well functioning conservatives backed away over the years, and these people have been filling the vacuum -- funded by people like the Kochs and their spider web of organizations.

This has been going on for so long that it's easy to forget that there are sensible and honest leadership-quality conservatives out there -- because they've been refusing to enter politics for some years now.

And that's from someone (me) who believes that middle-to-hard-right conservatives are fundamentally incompetent and unsuited to governance of diverse peoples in eras of change (which is to say, any time anywhere).

5. She did not turn toward the Republican Party, because she did not much like John McCain. But she did kind of like Sarah Palin, who seemed “more normal” to her. She has said that when she went to her first Tea Party meeting, she felt like she found “her people.” She especially liked their stance against government spending on social programs.

Rowling comes from a long line of Brits who write excellent children's literature. Growing up in post-WW II America, I read a whole slew of books portraying the courage of children and teens during WW II in Europe.

Here is what I learned so long ago, and what I hope every young reader of the Potter series will learn: This is what a totalitarian regime looks like, this is what fascism is, and YOU can fight back, and indeed you MUST fight back.

Damn right we have Death Eaters among us today.
