Charles Pierce: Rick Snyder Is Done. He's Toast.

http://readersupportednews.org/opinion2/277-75/34812-focus-rick-snyder-is-done-hes-toast

Later, of course, under the expanded emergency-manager law that was a pet project of Snyder's from the time he was inaugurated, Mayor Walling was replaced by an "emergency manager"—the city has had four of them since Snyder expanded the law—under whom the switch from the DWSD to the Flint River was completed. By the time the crisis was brewing underground, the elected local officials of the city of Flint had virtually no power at all. It's hard to imagine that this crisis would have come to the point to which it has come if the people responsible for it actually had to face the voters. At the very least, Snyder may have to have a chat with Congress about the whole thing.

However, for the moment, the emails get even worse.

A background memo sent to the governor on 1 February dismissed the pleas of Flint's then mayor Dayne Walling for state assistance, saying that the mayor had "seized on public panic … to ask the state for loan forgiveness and more money for infrastructure improvement". Flint's water supply was contaminated by lead, poisoning thousands of residents, after the source of the city's drinking water was switched from Detroit to the Flint River in April 2014. Water from the Flint River had for months corroded lead from the inside of water pipes in thousands of households across the city. The memo, which was among 274 pages of emails related to the city's crisis, also said that it was "clear that folks in Flint are concerned about other aspects of their water – taste, smell and color being among the top complaints", but said that the Safe Drinking Water Act "does not regulate aesthetic values of water". The words "does not" were underlined.

(We should never forget that the voters of Michigan overturned the expanded emergency-manager law in 2012, only to have a new Republican majority in the state legislature pass another bill

slightly adjusting the parameters of the law that was defeated. Would you like a banana with your republic?)

from 19 limbaugh stations that will be defending him while wearing the logos of 3 major michigan universities. Michigan St. 11, Michigan 7, Western Michigan 1

rw radio in all states is closely coordinated with state and national GOP. because the dems and left ignore it it is very succcessfull- invisible to those whose asses it kicks.

and these universities in those states you mentioned are helping those governors defund public ed, keep tuition high, fight legislation to reduce student debt, and suppress student voting.

FLORIDA 20 Florida 10, Florida St. 4 Miami 2, South Florida 2, Central Florida 2
KANSAS 4 Kansas St. 2, Kansas 1, Wichita St. 1
WISCONSIN 4 Wisconsin 4

there are 90 major universities that help 260+ limbaugh stations blast the country with racism, sexism, lies and global warming denial, and most of them probably can't make it without the community cred and ad draw those associations provide.

it's absurd- if michiganders want to get him and the republican legislature out all they have to do is petition and protest at those unis until they declare they will look for apolitical radio stations to broadcast their sports.

the discussion will cause station advertisers to flee until the stations find alternate programming.

the walker emails showed how closely he and his office was coordinating with local rw radio to attack his opponents and make his excuses. there were numerous emails showing that. that's why wisconsin protests didn't work- a few blowhards made enough noise. if the protestors had protested those radio stations instead, or the university of wisconsin for supporting 4 of them while they attacked the protestors, the story would be different.

all republicans rely heavily on talk radio to get elected, pass their anti democratic legislation, commit crimes, and stay elected.

liberals ignoring that fact is why we're in this trump cruz limbaugh mess the last 25 years. probably only a handful of snyder haters in michigan even know whats going on on talk radio in defense of snyder.

You are so right. It's maddening...and we do nothing about it.

All the protesting in the world won't help unless it's directed at the right problem. They could give a rats-ass how many people show up at City Hall, because they've got hundreds of these little propaganda machines throughout the state pumping out their "privatize everything" bullshit, and they have the legitimacy of Big Time College Football and Sports.

The NFL Players have a Union. There is absolutely NO WAY that a professional Football Team should have anything broadcast, from a game to a coaches show, on any station that carries Limbaugh or any of the other hate-talkers.

Urban Meyer, who does a great job recruiting young men to his team, should not have his show followed by an a$$hat who will spend three hours demeaning and slandering some of the neighborhoods and parents those young men come from.

10,000 people protesting at City Hall don't have nearly the impact that 50 people carrying signs outside 200 local radio stations would.

This has to end...and it has to start locally.

difficult unless a bunch of them or the unions did it at the same time so activist pro players weren't retaliated against by republican owners.

but i'll bet once it started happening at the college level the pros wouldn't be too far behind.

a lot of those stations are the loudest ones around so the team PR people will be pretty pissed off and it could get to the football crowd vs liberals. but that would be an important conversation that would bring the rw blowhards out from under their rocks.

BTW until we fix the rigged voting machines we will continue to get republicans

BP's Gulf oil spill happened because Dick Cheney's energy task force ruled that
having emergency kill switches on deep water oil rigs was too expensive.

The Big Branch Coal Mine explosion in W.V. was the result of w bush appointing
an executive from Massey Energy to be in charge of mine safety and despite tons
of documented safety problems the mine just ignored them because they knew
no enforcement would take place.

In Wisconsin Scott Walker chased out or fired many state employees who were
responsible for dam and levy safety and it is just a matter of time before something
goes bad and people are put at risk.

Republicans slander government and then disassemble it. Then they make it impossible to re-assemble it.
Then they say hey, it's not us, it's that evil government. Then they use the government to destroy democracy. And because our education system is so degraded, we don't know what to do next.

It's the perfect crime.

offering rates that were lower long term, if Flint remained with Detroit's water district -- but so that the Detroit water system itself could be forced into financial distress, then privatized and its pieces sold off to private hands and its unions busted.

It's bad enough to poison children to save money. In this case, though, children were poisoned for higher profits for the plutocrats.

Charlie Pierce notes poignantly that those calling for Snyder's resignation are the same people who complained about the water and whose complaints were ignored then.

But they're lower-income minority and white kids, so who cares?

Tue Jan 26, 2016, 11:39 AM
Jan 2016

They don't even know when the new governor privatizes their local government. This lack of knowledge does not surprise me, unfortunately. Ask most people who their city council member or mayor is and they look like a deer in the headlights, reaching for who in the hell that is. Yet, come election time, it didn't seem to matter in Flint.

I caught a reaction the other day to a question put to a Flint resident after this horror occurred, "Where do you think the BLAME starts?"... After that same look, the woman decided she'd begin with their city council/mayor.

People don't even know the structure of their local government. And, who can be surprised?

I tried to reach out proactively as a councilwoman for 5 years. Most people remain clueless, unless a problem hit the media effecting them or their neighborhood. The local news considers only covering what bleeds, and just as it always doesn't wish to inform beyond what bleeds, you'd never know where most of your taxes go. The corporately owned television media is even less informative.

It takes a catastrophe to wake up to demons running the show, folks. Why is that?

Snyder hires a campaign donor to 'investigate' if anything illegal was done.
His office is on record having ridiculed people who were complaining about their water after being told it was safe to drink.
He only released some of the emails involved in the scandal, and those that were released were heavily redacted.
He has now hired a PR firm to try and save his ass.
edit: Forgot to add:
Manipulated testing results by leaving off the most heavily poisoned samples so the average would appear lower.
