not nearly as much out of balance as a lot of people think it is.

My biggest worry is research budgets being be cut too much, leaving us losing out on innovation. The reduction of Bell Labs to a product testing lab bodes ill-- the beginning of the end was when they fired the guy who discovered black holes ("How can we make money off of black holes?&quot and then got rid of their semiconductor and basic physics research.

American science without Bell Labs, ITT research, Xerox Labs, Sarnoff, HP... leaves too little.
