Wow, what a night. Regarding domestic abuse and cop's reaction...

Since my home burned down in a fire I have been living in an extended stay hotel. For the last six months. Hasn't been easy but has been relatively cheap.

For the most part, it has been uneventful. But tonight was different.

I had a craving for Wafflehouse hash browns that could not be denied so I left for them. I walked down the hall towards the exit of the hotel and couldn't help but notice an argument between a man and a woman from one of the rooms. An hour later, I returned to hear the same but accentuated with slaps and punching sounds.

I returned to my room and called security and had to leave a recording. I then left my room again to check on the sounds and found the security guard doing maintenance. He said , "Don't worry, go back to your room."

Anyway, I don't feel like typing the bullshit that happened right after and in between in detail, but this is how it ended.

I went back to my room and threw on my old biker jacket which still smells like smoke and went to the room where I had been hearing the slaps, hits and muffled screams.

I knocked lightly on the door and before I could announce myself... It opened.

"Hey, guys. Everything okay?" I asked. "I'm a neighbor and the resident biker and was worried."

(I didn't want to say that I was a 63 year old guy with heart disease that might drop dead at any moment)

The skinhead opened the door and invited me in and I'll be goddamned if I didn't go in.

I bullshitted my way through five minutes until the cops came which I was hoping to happen and then watched them only have to leave the property. It was all about keeping the owners clear and avoiding paperwork on a non political crime.

I'm so sick of living here.

Especially since you weren't confrontational. I think it was pretty brave of you.

And I hope you can soon get out of there.

But you really did something brave tonight, for that woman who was being abused.

You might not have felt brave, but you were.

Thank you.

Domestic violence is no joke and having a neighbor check in does little good because it always recurs and it always escalates, no matter which partner is doing the hitting--or if both of them are.

Next time, just let the cops handle it. While the biker jacket got you a little respect this time, it won't always be the case.

Worst one for me was a rooming house in Boston, argument from down the hall spilt out in the hall. I had no phone, cell phones were owned only by the wealthy few, and there was nothing I could do. I left for work at eleven, it had been quiet for a little while, and heard a woman sobbing. The glass in the front door was broken and there was blood all over the walls. I called the cops from work, reported her room number and gave the description of the pimpy looking guy leaning against his car out front, the blood on his clothing signaling he had something to do with the whole thing.

If I ever have to live in a cheap rooming house again, you can bet I'll have a cell phone.

In my 20's... Well, I weighed 120 and wasn't all that threatening.

That was pretty ugly.

And I told the cops everything I could.

I do understand completely. Sometimes you need to realize a dead bystander won't do anyone any good.

Smart and fast thinking, don't know if I would have thought something up that fast. Good on ya.
