In 2008, it was huge because it signalled to black voters that Obama was legitimate, setting the stage for a decisive transfer of votes from Clinton. In 2004, Kerry's rise coincided with Dean's implosion and the latter was basically dead in the water heading into NH. No one is going away after tonight and the dynamics of the race won't be altered as they were in 2008.

(3,784 posts).............until recently, almost NEVER won the nomination. Kerry and Obama bucked that trend, so I don't know if that thinking still stands today.
As I've pointed out to a friend several times, Iowa is known for wild swings and unpredictable outcomes. It's the nature of the way their caucus system works. Those things are wild. I remember watching them on C-SPAN in 2004 and thinking it was the craziest thing I'd ever seen.
