Since I posted such a bummer of a thread a few days ago, I thought I should balance it out with some good news.
I have a friend from childhood who has suffered from a genetic kidney disease pretty much his entire adult life.
He eventually had to have his kidneys removed, and was on dialysis for the last several years.
Well, he just got a kidney!!!
It was donated by a stranger!! The story is that a woman gave a kidney to a friend of hers, who was a match. Watching the process inspired the husband of the donor to do the same thing....for whomever might need it! Turned out, he was a match for my friend!!!
My friend is currently in the hospital, recovering. He wanted to thank the donor, so the donor has gone to visit him. They look remarkably alike! Who knows, they might be related, since my friend was adopted at birth and knows nothing of his biological family.
Anyway, just a wonderful story and I'm so happy for my friend, and in awe of someone who would be willing to make that sacrifice for a stranger. I would gladly give a kidney to anyone I know who needed one (I wasn't a match), but to just say, "Hey, I'm going to give a kidney to whomever happens to need one."
Just amazing!!

Turned out that best match was my brother.
Of course, while it's quite nice not to be doing dialysis, your friend will be on immuno-suppressant drugs for the rest of his life.
