...they believe the US was founded, specifically, as a Christian Nation. God (the Christian version) being the ultimate Supreme Court/Ruler. Your US rights are granted by the Savior. Abortion should be outlawed. Gays are an abomination, and their marriage rights are to be ended by the more preeminent religious rights.

They smell victory - but they have since the 1970s. Carter and Reagan did not cooperate Clinton and Bush I didn't, but weren't expected to... only Bush II helped give them some hope. Another like him would mean greater success in the Christian Nation struggle.

The term evangelical derives from the Greek word euangelion meaning “gospel” or “good news.” Technically speaking, evangelical refers to a person, church, or organization that is committed to the Christian gospel message that Jesus Christ is the savior of humanity. The Greek root word is used in the New Testament and was popularized in the first centuries A.D. to distinguish the love-centric movement of Jesus followers from the violent Roman Empire that often made its own “good news” announcements to celebrate military victories.

When I was still in the Catholic Church, evangelicals were also called 'charismatic.' They were focused on spreading the Gospel and growing the Church.

As the article notes, politically "evangelical" tends to mean "conservative white Christian," something of a more friendly term than "fundamentalist."
