I'm striving to like Trevor Noah, but John Oliver was much better and no one holds a candle to Jon Stewart.
Noah is failing the Daily Show, and I have to speak up. When we lost Jon Stewart when he retired, we lost a valuable, credible and necessary voice in American politics.
It's so damn sad to see the Daily Show collapse like this, and a moment when we needed it the most.

(14,255 posts)world view is still evolving, and it is interesting, to me, the angle he brings to things when South Africa and how his life was, there, are in the mix when he talks about the US.
We were never going to "replace" Jon Stewart. Hopefully Jon's new HBO stuff will catch on and expand. hey, might as well dream big - maybe someone will bring him back nightly for the campaign season.
It is, of course, so very fucking pitiful that we look to a comedian on the Comedy Channel for honest reporting. And we are a bit spoiled because we still have Stephen Colbert to watch. Again, I am hoping and hoping someone brings Jon back for this campaign and election cycle - he is, again IMO, needed.

(15,090 posts)I was a little dubious at first because I didn't think he would get American culture, but I've warmed up to him. Maybe it's that cute smile.

(17,796 posts)Let's give Trevor at least a couple before calling him a failure. I'm not running to check the show out (yet), but I'm laughing when I do.

(50,278 posts)I can't think of anyone who could compete with Jon Stewart. If only he'd waited to cover this election cycle.

(45,319 posts)I am happy with Larry and the Nightly Show along with John Oliver on Sunday nights.
On Trevor's behalf I will say that when Jon came to the Daily, it took me a while to like him. He made the Daily and also the Daily made him.

I didn't expect another Stewart and was skeptical originally. But the maybe 10 times I've watched Trevor hosting, I've been laughing.
Trevor is probably just as much a Lefty as Jon is and considering that TDS, with Craig Kilborne, had never intended to slant either way, I'd say the show is still a powerful platform for comedy and sanity.
You must have caught a string of weak shows. Even Stewart had his off days.

(8,584 posts)I think Colbert and Stewart took the writing talent with him to the Late Show.
Jon Stewart is the executive producer.

(4,259 posts)Colbert still has his monologue moments which are great and the topics sometimes (often?) surprise me. I can't believe hw he's stretching the network TV standards. It's awesome!
What I dislike is its rigidity. In most cases there are 3 guests. One is a musical guest that is generally pretty obscure. At least to me.
What I find fascinating is what I see as mannerisms in his opening dialog the are so Johnny Carson! Really! Watch!
Moving around the stage, the pauses, the hand in the pocket, stroking a jacket lapel...
I bet dollars to donuts that he studied films of Carson.
Cheers

TDS hasn't skipped a beat

(10,137 posts)Trevor Noah's guests are mostly from film, TV, and music - very few authors. It does let me make a dent in the backlog from the Stewart era, but I miss new recommendations.
OTOH, The Nightly Show has found its footing and is regular viewing in my home. And I'm in love with Holly Walker.

(21,691 posts)I think Oliver is as good if not better than Stewart was in Stewart's last years; while Stewart was still very, very good, he'd lost some of his bite and edge in the last five years.
As for Trevor Noah ... he's not taking off as quickly as Stewart did when he took over the TDS, but Kilborne hadn't been hosting it for as long nor had he set the bar so high. It could be that Noah just isn't that good, period instead of just not being Jon Stewart, but I hope he improves. So far, I haven't been that interested but I really hope he improves and does well.

I mean... the Fuck You Gospel Choir? Come on, how great was that?

(4,259 posts)I can't put my finger on what's wrong. I mean the show's format hasn't changed, right down to Your Moment of Zen.
Thinking of him now, I think what's missing is Stewart's intensity, or a certain earnestness that I don't get from Noah.
The Daily Show was Stewart's life. It's more of a really good job for Noah.
IMO.

(3,581 posts)When I finally got a DVR, that meant I no longer had to suffer the Today Show or Morning Joe in the morning before work. I could start off the day with Jon and Stephen... and keep up with Letterman in the evenings. They were all shows I didn't want to miss.
I'm striving to like Trevor, too... but he laughs at his own jokes far too much for my liking. I get the sense that he'd rather be charming than funny or incisive. I've seen every episode, and though the show has its moments, I don't find myself laughing out loud anywhere near as often as I did when Jon hosted.
Trevor tries to do too many voices, too, in my opinion. He is not that good at them. I thought the thing he did recently that was supposed to be as if he were doing the show from Selma in the '60s was just awful.
And the writing has fallen off abysmally. And I don't think it is that they went with Colbert. I'm a lifelong Colbert fan, but watching his show is like homework to me. It gets deleted unwatched if the DVR is too full. It also has its moments, but the writing there is not always great. I can see a lot of the jokes coming down 5th avenue. And the Late Show doesn't have the Colbert Report's edge... or Letterman's edge. I realize it is for a different audience.... I just don't need the high kicks and that sort of stuff. I want sarcasm & biting wit.
Wilmore's show is very good and I like all the supporting cast. John Oliver is back soon... and I'm looking forward to Samantha Bee's new show.
But the loss of Stewart and the decline of TDS, at roughly the same time as the loss of The Colbert Report and Letterman is still taking a lot of adjustment.

(39,961 posts)and John Oliver is absolutely hilarious. Oliver was fantastic taking over for the Daily Show while Jon was making Rosewater. His HBO show, though, is very good and reflects how talented he is.

(31,464 posts)Does anyone remember when Craig Kilborn was host? Very few. I used to love the show back then, then was kind of bummed when Jon Stewart took over. He was Kilborn. But he found his groove, he made the show his own, he became part of a great team of writers and actors.
Trevor Noah is definitely different. As with the Kilborn > Stewart changeover, it's going to take a little time. But, if you love Stewart as much as you claim, you have to trust that he's pick the right person for the right reasons. Quite honestly, my biggest problem with Noah is listening to him discuss deeply "American" topics -- in his South African accent. It's kind of like a tourist coming to your town and telling you everything that is wrong with it. But he'll find his stride. They've already changed things up, not the least of which is the opening stand-up format. Similar to Larry Wilmore's, which I think is brilliant.
Give Trevor Noah a chance to make the show his own, just the way we gave Stewart a chance when he took over from Kilborn.

(100,080 posts)He's got the potential to be great but he's still got some big shoes to fill. I mean Jon Stewart is a hall of famer and a legend, it's nearly impossible to follow him, so yeah just time.

Nightly Show is incredible now as well.
