One of the more explosive lyrics from Kanye West's 'The Life of Pablo' finds the rapper saying of Taylor Swift on "Famous," "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / I made that bitch famous." Contrary to reports, Swift does not approve.

(2,061 posts)Proof?
A real musician would not use autotune.
Act_of_Reparation
(9,116 posts)Autotune isn't an easy button. If you're a shitty singer, you sound even shittier autotuned. Autotune simply cuts down on studio time by correcting minor pitch shifts (slightly sharp or slightly flat) that all singers of all skill levels are liable to make.
Using autotune anywhere but in the studio, however, should be a capital offense.
ProfessorGAC
(65,160 posts)While i agree that it isn't necessarily an "easy button", it will actually correct, almost instantaneously, pitch that is off by almost 75 cents. However, that creates an audible difference in timbre that i'm certain you would recognize. 90% of people won't, so a "shitty" singer would be considered great by the masses, not "shittier". While i concur that you can clearly hear a bad singer using autotune, most can't.
Also, since digital editing quite easy to make seamless (to within fractions of a microsecond), it does not take much studio time for someone to just sing one line, grab the offending word, and let the workstation insert it into the exact right spot. So, using it in the studio isn't that big an advantage to really good vocalists.
Hence, there are not a whole lot of very good singers that use it, since fixing it without it is fast and simple.
As a result, about the ONLY use that a good singer has for it, is live. Then the extra strain required to sing over the much louder and "mushier" live backing (even with fantastic monitor systems) where a very good singer might miss a high note by 6 or 8 cents, gets corrected to perfect.

(2,061 posts)A very scientific answer.
Music, while mathematically based (or defined after the fact), is about emotion and feeling. To use autotune is a crutch that is an insult to live audiences more so than studio recordings.
ProfessorGAC
(65,160 posts)Especially now in this age where dancing is part of the performance. Easy for even a superb singer to miss the timing on taking in a breath and not having the power to hit the high note.
But, at least it's not angry disagreement.
ryan_cats
(2,061 posts)WHAT DO YOU MEAN? It is not angry, grrr!
Oh wait, this isn't about the primary.
I don't remember dancing being a part of Van Halen last time I saw them, maybe that's why Sammy got the boot?

(65,160 posts)BTW: I saw the Van Hagar era too, at the Rosemont Horizon. BTO was the opening act.

(2,061 posts)Did Freddy Mercury or The Beatles need to use autotune? Besides the horrible artifacts its use leaves, it also allows, so called musicians, to avoid anything like, I don't know, controlling their voice for pitch. Developing an ear?
Then again, rap, is not in any shape or form, music to me.

(9,116 posts)Did Muddy Waters need stomp boxes and Marshall stacks? Did Beethoven need a recording studio? Did Mozart need session musicians? Did Bach need electricity?
Autotune is like any other piece of studio equipment. It can be a tool for the creative or a crutch for the lazy. Maynard James Keenan used it on A Perfect Circle's eMotive album. You gonna tell me he can't sing?

It's a tool... and far too many people are unable to solve math problems without a calculator because the superficial knowledge does not allow for that depth of comprehension.
Separating those who rely on it from those who merely use it is step one...

(2,535 posts)through the years. I did watched a 60 Minutes episode about a young woman who wrote her first song at 14 and was doing doing concerts. She didn't have special effects or costumes face paint, just reasonable dress and good music for someone so young. I am not a big fan either other than paying a little more attention to her on the internet new pages.
As far as Kayne goes, he is absolute trash. I have watched the clip of him rushing the microphone when Taylor Was accepting her award and taking it away from her.
He decided he was right and all the people who actually voted for Taylor to get the award were wrong.
He is total trash.

(36,459 posts)USC student Sam Deutsch used his 30 seconds of College Jeopardy intro time to fanboy hard-core over Kanye. The only problem is the episode aired less than an hour after Kanye outraged pretty much the entire world with a single tweet.
"Kanye West has become a great inspiration for you in what way?" asks Trebek, who honestly should've just burst out laughing.
"I mean, honestly in every way?" responds Deutsch. "His music, of course, but also he's been recently getting into fashion, which I really respect. He has great shoes coming out that's not a promotion or anything, everybody would agree with me on that. Finally, just his aura. He really carries himself in a way that he's his own man." Damn, someone wants free Yeezys.
Deutsch proceeded to say he would vote for Kanye should he run for president. Less than an hour later, Kanye tweeted BILL COSBY INNOCENT !!!!!!!!!!

(2,931 posts)They do give a good amount of athletic scholarships to low income areas in LA, but the white guys and girls (for the record I am white), who have rich parents that buy them a USC admission really cheapens the educational standard at the school. I'm almost shocked they are still accredited based on working in the engineering field in LA, surrounded by both USC and UCLA grads (I went to neither school). The difference is very noticeable. I learned a lot from the UCLA guys, but had to teach a lot to USC guys of the same experience and job title. In the end, you go there to buy connections, or play football. Maybe it wasn't always that way, but it sure is now

(36,459 posts)in jest. That white thing in the sky is just one of the kernels. He walked the gauntlet wearing a shirt over his jersey, but last year he visited wearing his UCLA marching band uniform, and that that drew a whole lot of attention. The rivalry is intense, but USC was kindhearted because the won the Victory Bell this year.

Yesterday he dropped that he's more than 50 million in debt. Within hours gazillionaires from all over the world got in touch, offering up all kinds of deals.
