President Barack Obama is granting national monument status to nearly 1.8 million acres of scenic Southern California desert, a move the White House says will maintain in perpetuity the region's fragile ecosystem and natural resources, as well as provide recreational opportunities for hikers, campers, hunters and others.

(58,785 posts)our kids in a cab-over camper many weekends, but I am very glad he is doing this. Population growth means vast destruction has been taking place. BTW, anyone who has a chance to camp in the desert for the first time, be sure and do it. But skip the campfire and sit in the dark gazing at our planets, our galaxy and on past out into the universe. It is incredible.

(28,394 posts)It's sickening what they are doing to our beautiful state. Especially after so much work was done to improve the waterways following all the industrial pollution of the past.
