MALHEUR STANDOFF: Occupiers arrested, but it’s still not over

BURNS — Emotion. Exhaustion. Relief.

All were on display Thursday afternoon from Harney County Sheriff David Ward during a news conference marking the end of the 41-day armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters. The siege ended late Thursday morning with the peaceful surrender of the last four holdouts.

Ward started his turn at the podium in front of local, national and international news cameras by saying how proud he was of his friends and neighbors. “And I am proud of the way you stood up against this stuff,” he said.

The sheriff, in only his second year on the job, said good can come out of all that has happened.

The cleanup at the refuge will likely include clearing out gag gifts sent to the occupiers from people mocking their cause around the country after they had put out calls for supplies, including snacks. Grasty said the FBI may have to sort through them.

“Funny or not, they have a truckload of (sex toys) to deal with,” he said.

All kidding aside, I kinda doubt the dildos - which were gifts rather than something the occupiers brought with them - will be entered into evidence. Maybe they'll throw all the dildos, bags of dicks and other "contributions" into a big box and run it across the nearest truck scale..."People's Exhibit 39: thirty thousand pounds of bananas, sex toys, personal lubricant and other items sent to the refuge through the US Mail."
