2. Why does the Russell Sage Foundation define the 'elite' as rich people?

An elite is "a select group that is superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society". I thought this was going to be about the views of top professors, or another group whose ability to think made their thoughts worth knowing. What is wrong with using the word 'rich' to describe people with lots of money?
