Lately it seems that I keep having the same conversation over and over again:
A young woman looks at me across her glass of wine. She looks anxious because she works for an energy company planning a round of layoffs and pay cuts. I dont know how Im going to make it if I get laid off, she sighs. I thought I had it made, but I cant make it if they cut my payIm a single mother and my ex isnt exactly coming through with child support. Its a shame because it used to be a great place to work.
The Sams Club door person, an elderly lady, is chatting with another employee. As I approach, holding my receipt to be examined, the other employee scuttles off. The elderly lady shakes her head and bitterly tells me, We used to have bonuses and incentives and theyd pay us extra for working Sundays. Now theyre cutting our hours and taking away our vacation. This used to be a great place to work, now its just a paycheck.
A middle-aged man works as a coder for a mid-sized financial firm. Theyre making us do twice the work for the same pay. Im working 60 hours a week and not being paid overtime, but Im afraid to complain because theyll hire some Indian to do my job. I dont have the time or the energy to look for another job. I used to work normal hours. This used to be a great place to work.

Actually, that's pretty harsh on my part. But that's why working people need to stick together, because the employers and the managers they hire to run the place aren't going to be looking out for the best interests of their workers, and they don't care about working conditions because they don't think that feeds the bottom line.

It's part of the design.

(12,754 posts)Costco treats their employees like human beings, pay them well, and give them benefits. Probably why they have an amazingly low turnover rate.
I've been going to the same Costco for 15 years. A lot of the people there were there when I started going and the newer ones have been there more than a few years.
