Students And Veterans Turned Away From The Polls Under Wisconsins New Voter ID Law
by Alice Ollstein Feb 17, 2016 4:51 pm
Wisconsins local primary election put the states new voter ID law to the test Tuesday, causing problems that left officials seriously concerned about how voters will be impacted this November.
The election decided several mayoral contests and helped conservative Justice Rebecca Bradley clear a key hurdle to maintaining her seat on the states powerful Supreme Court.
The law will be in place again for the presidential primary on April 5, which is likely to see greater voter turnout. But even in Tuesdays local election, issues with ID arose.
Though the laws implementation was mostly smooth, some students and veterans were unable to cast regular ballots, because the state doesnt recognize a federal veterans benefits card or a state university ID for voting purposes.
After few overall complaints came in, Gov. Scott Walker (R) tweeted that all was well in the Badger State.
Yet local media reported that turnout was extremely low in the single digits in some counties.

(171,092 posts)than a military ID? Likewise students? WI is putting up roadblocks to voting instead of helping people who want to vote.

(53,339 posts)Vets enrolled in VA health care will have a VA ID card, and apparently that's being rejected even though it's a federal government-issued photo ID..

(171,092 posts)So the gov't-issued card isn't sufficient? How strangely ironic. Should be illegal. imo.

(36,063 posts)The woman in front of me had trouble extracting her license from her billfold and they let her hold the billfold and show it through the plastic window.
When the poll worker asked me to hand her my drivers license I emphatically said, NO! You can look at it while I hold it, the law doesn't appear to require I surrender it.
Two other workers at the table said that was right.
I went home wondering how the hell would a poll worker recognize a fake DL through the plastic window in a woman's wallet, or held in my hand from several feet away.
It's a law written by slow-witted paranoids who want to suppress the vote. It has to be resisted
