Congressional scholars: Republican Party ‘has veered off the tracks’

...The book describes the Republican Party as “an insurgent outlier … ideologically extreme; contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime; scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.”

With the "browning" of America coming in the not too distant future, the Republican Party in it's current form will be going the way of the Whig Party - i.e. extinct.

Is this why we see the rightward drift of the Democrtatic Party? Today's Democratric Party is the Republican Party of the 1950's.

There is no Democratic Party as it once existed as a progressive party under FDR or HST.

There are multiple reasons for the rightward drift of the Democratic Party...money is perhaps the easiest to identify...Clinton courted Wall Street to gain campaign funding. Obama did the same in 2008. But the drift began after Johnson pushed civil rights legislation through the congress. All politics in the US are racial. Because Lincoln was a Republican the "South" was a solid wall of blue until the civil rights legislation became a reality. Johnson said "I'm afraid we've lost the south for at least a generation" To counter that move the Democrats became more centrist to hang onto what was left of their base because truth be told there are plenty of racist Yankees....

Democrats were in control of the congress when Reagan began dismantling unions and creating unmanageable debt...how the hell did they allow that to happen? Cowardice for one...Americans love tax cuts and the Dems were too cowardly or too lazy to explain why we needed higher taxes...it has become the calling card of the DNC...allow the GOP to cut taxes while keeping social programs in place and never cut military spending...thus the absurd national debt.

Do not count on the browning of America...the real reason the GOP is so anti-choice is that 42% of all abortions are provided to White women...32% to Black women...20% to Hispanic women. The long term GOP plan is to drive Hispanics out of the country while outlawing abortions. Republicans like the Koch brothers began long range planning from the moment Reagan won the nomination...Charles Koch ran against him in the primaries and didn't see him as conservative enough....Think about that. Supreme Court appointments eventually led to Citizens United...and those same justices will overturn Roe v Wade the first chance they get. While the GOP quietly set about working for their long range goals, Democrats just drifted with the times. We the people will be paying for that cowardice and indolence for at least a dozen years.
