If it's Cruz, and Rubio flames out, we'll have one of the nuttiest Republican Primaries imaginable.

(65,616 posts)and worst runs in GOP history. It will be GREAT for Dems if it is those two nutballs. I think we would have a harder time if Jeb? had his dark money help him lead in the pols along with Rubio. Looks like Jeb? is done and Carson too.
Look for a 3 way fight between Rubio, Cruz and Trump. Maybe we will get lucky and have a triple threat match! The broken robot vs the reverse vampire vs the maniacal tycoon!

(30,814 posts)So I'll say Rubio. He would be a horrible president of course. But I don't think we would wind up with a nuclear holocaust, so that's saying something.

(4,213 posts)We want a two way race between Cruz and Trump. That will virtually ensure that no matter who wins on their side that we are going to be going up against people that we can beat easily. Rubio will be more of a challenge. I don't want a challenge. I want to win the Presidency walking away with a landslide.

(32,086 posts)That being said, Rubio is the most dangerous one of the two, because he appears to be the sane one. So, he's more likely to sucker people into voting for him. He'd probably choose fellow sociopath, Nikki Haley, as his running mate. She has already suckered friends of mine, who are normally intelligent liberals, into believing she's a decent person.

(3,261 posts)But I think you're right that Rubio/Haley is probably more dangerous. If (and that's a BIG if) Rubio can win despite the fact that 55% of GOP voters have hitched their wagons to the completely insane, he will have avoided moving so far to the right that he can't slink backwards and pretend to be moderate in a GE fight.

(26,756 posts)I agree that a president Rubio is probably less painful that a Trump or Cruz, but a candidate Rubio is more likely to beat us.

(2,003 posts)With a Republican congress, they'll rubber-stamp everything he asks for and he'll sign everything they give him.
Honestly, I'd rather have Trump. When you ignore the Mexican wall that will never get built and look at his actual policies, he's not really all that conservative. He's not a Bible-thumper. He's not much of a So-Con. I don't see him signing any anti-gay or anti-choice legislation. He's not going to mire us in pointless wars halfway across the globe. Some of his tax proposals might actually be considered progressive, as are his views on health care.
On top of all this, he's loathed by the Republican establishment. They'll do what they can to stonewall him but the sentiments are mutual.
Cruz? Forget it. That guy is as slimy as they come.

Trump is the easiest to beat. We could by gosh put Texas into play with Trump up there!

(2,682 posts)the choice of VP running mate is extremely important. Trump could decide that he's bored being Pres and abdicate in favor of the VP. Or croak in his first term. Yikes!!!
As in the case of McCain/Palin, the crazy bitch drove away even the most conservative voters. She was just too bat-shit crazy for even them. You know what they say, a heartbeat away from the presidency.
So what do we hope for? That if nominated, Trump loses. However, we have also seen in recent history, cases where the election was clearly stolen (2000, 2004) so Trump's (or the GOP's) choice of a running mate is critical. We don't want another total train wreck for president.
Cruz is a megalomaniac who wants to bring god into the government
Rubio is a light-weight, who I suppose could be easily manipulated by right-wingers.
So, no on both of them. Not sure who that leaves as I think of the Republican field a total disaster.

(54,041 posts)Clinton will probably get the Dem nomination
Trump would clobber Clinton in the general election. Clinton's best chance is to run against Cruz or Rubio. Obviously Cruz would be the easier to beat, but Cruz can't get the nomination over Trump.
If Cruz drops out of contention, Rubio could conceivably win over Cruz's supporters, the hard crazy Christian right. He's still got Tea Party cred and has backtracked on his brief flirtation with responsible public policy on immigration issues.
But if Rubio falls to a hopeless 3rd place and has to drop out to try and stop Trump, there's simply no way Cruz could pick up Rubio's support. Trump would take at least half of Rubio's support and all of his big endorsements.
So my answer is Rubio. He's not to be underestimated as a campaigner, despite a few notable flubs in the early going. But this is the same country that elected Reagan. He's to be feared, but I'd give Clinton at least even chances in the popular vote. And if all goes right, the electoral college would provide Clinton with a sort of "fire wall" (if I may coin an original phrase) to stop her opponent.
