First let me state that, as someone who very nearly suffered the same fate, two years ago, this really hits home. And my generator was outside the house, on an open screened in porch - but a wind shifted and blew the carbon monoxide back into the house. NEVER run a generator without plugging in a carbon monoxide detector!! The video explains that this family was running their generator in their family room!
FENTON TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (2/21/16) - A family of six was found dead inside their home, Sunday. The Genesee County Sheriff's Office believes they died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
The family, two adults and four children, were found by a family member in their bedrooms around 2:30 p.m. The kids are between two and 11 years old.
Sheriff Robert Pickell says they were running a generator in the downstairs family room of their home on Stony Brook Pass, likely because of a power outage, Friday night. That's when the family was last heard from.
The Fenton Township Fire Department was the first crew inside the home and had to open windows to clear out toxic fumes.
"It's just very sad. It appears the accident may be cause by carbon monoxide inside the home," said Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell.

(1,604 posts)There's a load of PSAs out there annually and with every storm. CO warnings come with every generator too.
Truly sad.

(26,268 posts)When we had the big power outage, 2 years ago, most people had their generators in their garages with the doors propped open, a few feet. But so many generators were being stolen, some people shut the garage doors, at night. I remember hearing about a few deaths caused by the closed garages.
That's why I had mine in the back of the house, but the one thing I didn't consider was the wind factor. I will never, ever be without a carbon monoxide detector, again.

(1,604 posts)I'm up and down all night with the generator. Two to four hours of sleep at a shot. I figured out how long we can run with zero electric and the generator is off and chained inside. I learned how to load shed from my California friends. House will get cold but never frozen. I taught my neighbors as well and kept a few houses pumped out and from freezing.
