A New York state senator is hoping to prevent people who use food stamps (now known as SNAP benefits) from buying "luxury" food like steak and lobster. Republican State Senator Patty Ritchie proposed the controversial bill last week, Mashable reports.
Ritchie's bill also wants to forbid the use of food stamps from buying non-nutritional foods, such as cake. "The goal of this legislation is to improve dietary quality and reduce obesity. . . . This measure will also restrict the abuse of the program," the bill states. Instead, SNAP should be used on "essentials," she adds.
Which foods are defined as luxury items is up to the Office of Temporary Disability Assistance to decide, but it's unlikely that it will get that far. The state senate has a democratic majority, and democrats have historically opposed restrictions on the use of SNAP benefits. The only current restriction enforced in the state is one that prohibits SNAP debit cards from being used at establishments where gambling is legal.
The Obama administration, however, is pushing for easier access to healthy options at places that accept SNAP. Last week, the Department of Agriculture proposed a rule that would require stores to carry at least seven varieties of staples (think meat, dairy and bread) and a variety of produce in order to continue accepting SNAP benefits.

(14,858 posts)But you're right, the Republicans aren't about small government at all. I don't know why anyone still believes that lie.

(10,201 posts)How fucking vague can they get with "high-end" steak? If we took a poll, not two people would have the same definition. I also hate it when they leave the finer points to the executive branch to make all the determinations. This can get too arbitrary.
Pork cheeks... Really cheap (less than $1 lb) cut from the pig. I had recently ordered braised pork cheeks at a fine dining establishment. Would that make them high end? I can take a shitty cut of a meat, and given enough time and love make it quite delectable. Skirt and flank steak used to be really cheap. Now that the Food Network has shown folks how to make them awesome, dishes from the Texas - Mexico border have gained popularity, and boom, the prices went up. I kid you not, I used to get a nice skirt steak (diaphragm) for about $3 or $4 a pound. Today I've seen it in excess of $13. Damn-it you tasty, tasty fajitas!
But just because it sells for $13+ a pound, does not make it a luxury item.

(4,490 posts)assuming you're not dipping it in butter or loading it with a bunch of salt when you fix it. Some people are just against "the poors" enjoying something. Poor people are supposed to suffer.
Seems like smaller amounts of higher quality meat would be preferable to large amounts of low grade ground chuck.

(153 posts)I happen to have one neighbor who relies partially on food assistance, and probably the one luxury he has is the occasional soda. Yes, I've seen him purchase frozen breaded butterfly shrimp at Walmart - $7.99 for a bag of 40 - which is three to four meals. I also know people who, when they can find steak, purchase it from the last-date part the clearance bin and immediately freeze it - often at a price much less expensive than hamburger. Every poor person I've ever known has struggled, been creative, clipped coupons, shared tips, counted pennies (and yes, took them to the store to pay for essentials), shared household items like eggs and sugar and flour with others in need. And deny them a f****** cake mix which uses eggs and a bit of water and/or oil that can sometimes be on sale for less than a dollar so they can make their kid a simple birthday cake?
This pandering excuse for a 'legislator" needs to STFU until she agrees to limit State Assembly members to the same per diem restrictions on THEIR dietary choices. If she is so damned interested in proper nutrition and curbing obesity and carefully monitoring the spending of taxpayer monies, then she and her colleagues need to suck it up themselves and stay out of the fancy restaurants, "business" luncheons, and golf course deals at public expense. Moreover, this assemblywoman needs to PROVE that she knows anything about nutrition. Everybody who actually has to face supermarket prices already knows that the most nutritionally valuable items are always the most expensive. Why does she think most American families grew up with canned vegetables for meals (except in season when we could harvest some things from a garden?).
Sometimes I am absolutely convinced that the goal of every Republican is to deliberately impoverish the vast majority of Americans, then continue to blame them for not bettering themselves (even though the 'job creators" haven't created any damned jobs that paid enough to better themselves) and then put that population on a slave-on-a-plantation diet. I am already increasingly convinced that our hero-worshipped military no longer has anything to do with protecting the American people and everything to do with protecting wealthy corporate interests, whose "freedoms" are, apparently, the only ones that matter.
