so I quote David Simon, writer of "The Wire" on FB today, Here is the quote:

The people most affected . . . are black and brown and poor. It's the abandoned inner cores of our urban areas. . . . (E)conomically, we don't need those people. The American economy doesn't need them. So, as long as they stay in their ghettos, and they only kill each other, we're willing to pay a police presence to keep them out of our America. And to let them fight over scraps, which is what the drug war, effectively, is. . . (S)ince we basically have become a market-based culture and it's what we know, and it's what's led us to this sad denouement, I think we're going to follow market-based logic, right to the bitter end. ~David Simon, head writer of "The Wire"

I had no idea what a dust up this would cause from the "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" crowd. It seems they've forgotten they're barefoot.

I'm off to bang my head against a wall for an hour or so...

is that it is much more cost effective to give these people a helping hand and ensure that all the children in the community have access to early intervention head start programs and a quality education. The cost of policing and imprisoning the poor in this country is much greater than intervention programs.

If they do not want these programs because they do not want to help their fellow citizens, they should do it because it will save them money in the long run. Just as they should worry about the cost of lawsuits when the police use brute force to control these areas. It often ends up costing them millions of dollars to settle crimes committed by law enforcement and crooked justices.

They just never learn.
