Pew Poll: Republican Support for Safety Net Plummets

Republicans and Democrats are furthest apart in their opinions about the social safety net. There are partisan differences of 35 points or more in opinions about the government’s responsibility to care for the poor, whether the government should help more needy people if it means adding to the debt and whether the government should guarantee all citizens enough to eat and a place to sleep.

On all three measures, the percentage of Republicans asserting a government responsibility to aid the poor has fallen in recent years to 25-year lows.

Not surprising but interesting republican support for government taking care of those who can't take care of themselves has plummeted from 62% in 1987 to 40% now. Democratic, OTOH, support has remained relatively stable for the past 25 years.

is that the foolish Republicans don't see Social Security and Medicare as social safety nets. They think that they have "paid" for it. I was thrown off of the Tea party nation website for telling the truth about how SS works...some of those fools think they can end SS and get a refund check from the government...they honestly believe that the 6.5% they paid on income of $50K would add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I'm not very happy with my doc these days - his new co-workers are all Republican's and the propaganda is working.

It's not easy to get SSDI - they think you can just sashay into this program.
